Please join us tomorrow at Newburyport Fire Headquarters from 10am till 2pm to congratulate Chief Bradbury & Janice Richard and wish them both a happy and well- deserved retirement for their final shift!

After more than 73 years of combined service to the City of Newburyport, the Newburyport Fire Department will say farewell to two longtime members of our department as Fire Chief Stephen H. Bradbury III and Executive Assistant Janice Richard are set to retire at the end of this month.

Chief Bradbury has dedicated more than 33 years to the Newburyport Fire Department, beginning his career in 1993. A lifelong Newburyporter and the son of retired NFD Lieutenant Stephen Bradbury Jr., Chief Bradbury continued a proud family tradition of service to our city.

He was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2000, became Acting Fire Chief in 2022, and was appointed permanent Fire Chief in 2023. During his time as Chief, he also oversaw the construction and opening of the new Station 2, a major investment in the future of the Newburyport Fire Department and the community it serves. Throughout his career, Chief Bradbury’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to the members of this department and the citizens of Newburyport have left a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come.

Executive Assistant Janice Richard retires after an incredible 40 years of service to the City of Newburyport. Janice began her career as an aide to Mayor Peter Matthews before moving to the Treasurer’s Office in 2000 and the Highway Department in 2006. In 2013, she joined the Newburyport Fire Department as Executive Assistant to the Fire Chief.

For the past 13 years, Janice has been an invaluable part of our department. Her knowledge, dedication, and willingness to help have made her a trusted resource and friend to generations of Newburyport firefighters.

After more than 39 years of dedicated service to the City of Newburyport, Firefighter Bob Adams will work his final shift with the Newburyport Fire Department today!!

Throughout his career, Bob has proudly served the citizens of Newburyport while earning the respect and friendship of everyone who has had the privilege of working alongside him.

Please join us in celebrating Bob’s retirement at an open house at Station II today from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Stop by to thank Bob for his years of service, congratulate him on an outstanding career, and wish him all the best in retirement.

Five years ago today, the Newburyport Fire Department lost our brother, Firefighter Brett Burkinshaw, after his courageous battle with occupational brain cancer.

While five years have passed, Brett’s memory continues to live on and his impact is felt throughout the department. His dedication to serving our community, his friendship, and his unwavering commitment to others will never be forgotten.

Every single day, not just today, we remember Brett for what he was and continues to be….An incredible hero, friend, son, brother, husband and dad.
