🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️ Downtown & Waterfront Safety Reminder 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

The Newburyport Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors that bicycles, e-bikes, and skateboards are not permitted on brick sidewalks and pedestrian areas throughout the downtown and waterfront districts. These restrictions are in place to help ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone using these busy public spaces.

With increased foot traffic during the summer months, we ask all riders to dismount and walk their bicycles or e-bikes when traveling through brick-paved pedestrian areas. Skateboards and roller blades also may not be used in these locations.

Parents, please take a moment to remind your children about these rules and the importance of being mindful of pedestrians. Downtown Newburyport is a shared space enjoyed by residents, visitors, families, and local businesses, and a little courtesy goes a long way in keeping everyone safe.

✅ Yield to pedestrians at all times
✅ Observe posted restrictions on brick sidewalks and walkways
✅ Help keep our downtown and waterfront safe for everyone

🚨🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – YANKEE HOMECOMING ROAD RACE 🚨🚨

📅 Tuesday, July 28, 2026
The 66th Annual Yankee Homecoming Road Race will take place Tuesday evening. Please expect traffic delays, detours, and road closures throughout the race course. The course has changed from last year. It will no longer affect Plum Island but will go further on the west end of the city. Please reference the 10-mile race map.
⏰ From approximately 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, traffic will be restricted or detoured on streets along the race route.
Important Traffic Information:
🚧 The Hines Bridge and Chain Bridge will be closed beginning at approximately 6:00 PM for a couple of hours.
🚗 The best routes through the City during the race are Low Street and Route 1, which should experience little to no interruption.
➡️ All eastbound traffic on Storey Avenue will be directed onto Low Street.
There will be Newburyport Police officers and race volunteers stationed throughout the course to ensure the safety of the more than 2,000 runners participating in this year's event.
We hope this advance notice helps everyone plan their evening accordingly. If an emergency occurs anywhere along the race route—or anywhere in the City—we will be there to ensure emergency responders can get where they need to go.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this annual community event, which takes place on the same Tuesday every year.
And if you happen to find yourself temporarily stopped by a sea of runners... stay calm! It might be the perfect opportunity to cheer on your neighbors and visitors as they work toward accomplishing a goal. A little encouragement can go a long way.
🚲 If you're traveling around the race area Tuesday evening, consider using a bicycle as an alternative mode of transportation.

Officer Michael Wilichoski officially retires from the Newburyport Police Department today after 28 years of honorable service.

Mike was assigned to the evening shift for the entirety of his career. He was a motor officer, a field training officer and the most tenured member of the department’s Honor Guard unit having participated in hundreds of events.

Family, friends, and colleagues gathered at the police station this afternoon to celebrate Off. Wilichoski and his service to the City of Newburyport.

City Marshal Simons presented Off. Wilichoski with the very first challenge coin bearing the departments new mission statement, “Building trust, strengthening relationships, and keeping Newburyport safe together.” The mission statement may be new, but it is something Mike exemplified his entire career. Mike also received a letter of commendation from Mayor Sean Reardon for his dedicated service.

Congratulations Mike, we wish you a safe, happy, and healthy retirement!

This afternoon Marshal Simons and a number of officers from the police department paid a visit to Newburyport Recreation and Youth Services camp at Cashman Park. Officers had a great time sharing free ice water and popsicles with campers and staff to keep cool at the start of this heat wave! The kids had an opportunity to take some pictures and check out the departments new Can-Am Utility Task Vehicle (UTV). Stay cool everyone!
