The Bartlet Mall and Frog Pond
The Bartlet Mall (pronounced “mal”) is the City of Newburyport’s most visually prominent and historically significant municipal park. The park, designed by Victorian landscape architect and Frederick Law Olmsted partner, Charles Eliot, in 1887, features a large kettle hole pond known as the “Frog Pond” at its center. Located on the Mall’s promenade is the Essex Superior Courthouse. Designed by Charles Bullfinch, it is the oldest continuously operating superior courthouse in America. Both the Mall and the Courthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The 7.3 acre park is conveniently located in the center of town on High Street, only blocks from the downtown shopping district. It can be easily accessed from Route 1 and 95, and is a great park for visitors of all ages. The Mall is a a popular destination for quiet contemplation, play, and community gatherings alike. The park is a particular favorite of dog walkers, runners, those seeking a bench with a beautiful view, and during the winter, skaters. The playground and basketball court, situated in the northernmost corner of the Mall, are well loved by many local children.
A 2005 park restoration project did much to return the Bartlet Mall to Eliot’s originally conceived condition where simplicity of design and carefully calculated plantings characterized the open space. A new restoration project continues efforts to revitalize Eliot's vision for the park.
