- Patrolling the river and harbor while enforcing state and local laws.
- Managing the boat launching facility at Cashman Park
- Managing the central water front docks

- Provide waste water pump out vessel and shore facility at Cashman Park

The Newburyport Harbormaster Department was proud to take part in today’s Yankee Homecoming Parade alongside our partners at U.S. Coast Guard Station Merrimack River.

🎇 It’s almost fireworks time! 🎇

Whether you’re watching from shore or enjoying the fireworks from your boat, the Newburyport Harbormaster Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable evening.

Our patrol officers will be out on the water throughout the event to help keep everyone safe. As you head home after the fireworks, please remember that the harbor will be busy. Be patient, stay alert, and obey headway speed.

Have a great evening, enjoy the show, and thank you for doing your part to make it a safe night on the Merrimack River!

A special thank you to the Newburyport Fire Department for their work ensuring a safe setup and fireworks display both on land and on the harbor, and to the Newburyport Police Department for helping keep our community safe throughout tonight’s festivities.

CASHMAN PARK BOAT RAMP CLOSED TODAY (SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2026)

Due to the Newburyport Yankee Homecoming Fireworks, the Cashman Park Boat Launch will be CLOSED to all boaters TODAY (Saturday, August 1st).

Alternate Launch Access
The boat launch at Salisbury Reservation will honor Newburyport seasonal launch passes for today only.

Due to the Newburyport Yankee Homecoming Fireworks, the following restrictions are in place for any moored boat and dinghy at Cashman Park starting at midnight tonight:

🚤 Moored Boats: All boats on Newburyport moorings upriver of the Cashman Park Boat Launch must be removed by Friday, July 31st at 11:59 PM.

🚤 Inflatable Dinghies: All inflatable dinghies docked at Cashman Park must be removed by Friday, July 31st at 11:59 PM.

🚤 Aluminum Dinghies: Aluminum dinghies may remain in place; however, all gas cans must be removed by Friday, July 31st at 11:59 PM. If the gas can cannot be removed, the dinghy must be removed.

To support a safe and successful fireworks event, the following restrictions will be in place:

Not every rescue makes headlines.

On July 4, Diane and Ron Barrett were out for an evening boat ride when they jumped into action to save a life. Their quick actions and selfless willingness to help a child in distress near Plum Island made all the difference. We are incredibly grateful for their courage and are thrilled to see them recognized by Mayor Sean Reardon and the City Council.

Stories like this are a reminder that our waterways are safest when we all look out for one another. Whether it’s calling for help, throwing a life ring, or stepping in when you’re able, everyday people often become everyday heroes.

🇺🇸 Today, the City of Newburyport celebrated an incredible milestone - the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Market Square.

250 years ago the Declaration was first read aloud to the people of Newburyport, and today residents and visitors gathered once again to commemorate this historic moment.

The Newburyport Harbormaster Department was honored to play a part in today’s celebration by escorting two tall ships safely into Newburyport Harbor. It was a privilege to help welcome these historic vessels as they arrived to commemorate both our city’s rich maritime heritage and the birth of our nation.

Thank you to everyone who organized, participated in, and attended this memorable celebration of Newburyport’s history.

❓Are you in compliance with the Hanson-Milone Act?

The Hanson-Milone Act is a Massachusetts law that requires operators of motorized vessels to obtain a boating safety certificate.

The law is being implemented in phases:
• Born after January 1, 1989: Certificate required as of April 1, 2026.
• Born on or before January 1, 1989: Certificate required by April 1, 2028.

If you still need your certificate, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 38 Newburyport, MA is once again offering a boater safety certification course on Wednesday evenings in August at the North End Boat Club.
