⚠️ COMMUNITY AWARENESS NOTICE ⚠️
SOCIAL MEDIA “CAT IN THE HAT” TREND
The Newcastle Police Department and Chief Toby Garver want our community to know that we are aware of the social media posts commonly referred to as the “Cat in the Hat” trend.
These posts typically use an image of the Cat in the Hat with vague or specific threats involving schools. Similar posts have circulated nationwide, and many have been determined to be hoaxes.
At this time, we are aware of the trend and are closely monitoring the situation. We remain in communication with our local schools and will investigate any information involving a possible threat to students, staff, or our community.
Please remember that creating, sharing, or reposting threatening content is not a joke. Even if a post was intended to be funny or gain attention, it can cause fear, disrupt school operations, require a significant law-enforcement response, and result in criminal charges and school disciplinary action.
Parents and guardians, please talk with your children about this trend and remind them not to create, share, or repost these images.
If you see a concerning post:
• Do not share or repost it.
• Preserve the original post and account information.
• Report it directly to law enforcement or school officials.
• Call 911 if there appears to be an immediate threat.
We appreciate the community’s awareness and cooperation. The Newcastle Police Department will continue monitoring the situation and responding appropriately to any information involving our schools.
