Daffodil Hill Apiary

Daffodil Hill Apiary Local Provider of Honey and Honeybees/Honey Extraction Service I'm just a small local beekeeper that has half a dozen hives. Belvoir and the surrounding parks.

I work out of my backyard here in the Newington/Lorton area and yikes are these girls productive! Nothing I read prepared me for how much bees can take control of your life, but mine have and I love it. I started a few years ago with just one hive and through trial and error and I've developed that into a flourishing apiary. So much so that I needed to open a small business just to sell off all th

e excess bees and honey each year. If I've done anything right, its that I absolutely dote on my bees and no doubt spoil them. In this area there are not that many beekeepers but plenty of ornamental flowers in the surrounding neighborhoods and fields of wildflowers on Ft. So there is plenty of nectar, but not enough bees to collect it. I've been told my honey tastes more like wildflowers than any other honey folks have tried in the past. If you live in the Lorton/Newington/Ft. Belvoir area and you want to support a local apiary and/or want local honey due to its allergy mitigating qualities, then you can't get much more local than me. I sell 5 frame nucleus hives for $200. They come in a wax dipped white cardboard nuc box, wired wax foundation. I was inspected by the state last month and they only found 1 mite out of my 6 hives. All of the hives overwintered with ease and come from strong local stock. I'm also opening up a honey extraction service this year. See my Information Sheet in my photos to learn more. If there's one bright spot to the year, its how my new hives are doing at Tamarack stables. I just added another box to each of them this week, and they were SUCH angel babies when I checked them. I ran out of the house, forgot my veil and gloves, but got into them anyway without getting stung. Only a couple of them got slightly annoyed. Phew!

Hello All, I wish I had better news, but I've decided to cancel my spring harvest that I was going to do on the 15th. It's just been so cold and dry that the girls have had a very hard time building up. I know a few of you were on my honey waitlist and I'll be reaching out to others not on here to let them know. If there's any good news to pass on, somehow every single new queen made it back from their mating flights and are laying eggs. That's typically an 85% prospect. No idea how that's been possible, but I am grateful.

So if this had happened 8 years ago, I'd have been tempted to name it Black Widow Apiary. Found this pretty girl, yep, ironically while weeding the daffodil beds. She kept trying to crawl up my glove and I was all NOPE!!! and kept offering a leaf instead. Then she settled on dangling from my pinkie until I got her too the woods. That's two now in seven months.

You'd think 516 lbs. was enough, well it was not! I ran out late February and some of my regular customers expressed their joking not joking annoyance. 😄 Well, we can't have that again. So meet our two newest hives. Many thanks to the folks at Tamarack Stables in Mason Neck for hosting. Many rolling acres of beautiful green space that these girls will thrive in.

Everyone made it through all this freezing weather. Phew! The Nuc hives were especially busy. In about 5 weeks I'll get them out of their winter configuration and put the honey boxes back on.

Uh...glad I didn't lift from this part of the lid! And yep, that's one of my girls she caught to feed her unhatched babies. Everything is after the bees this time of year. And sorry to add to the nightmare fuel, but dang, this dangerous lady was FAST! When I tried to relocate her and the eggs, she darted up the lid and forced me to put it down right quick. 😬

Hey Everyone, just finished my summer harvest and the girls cranked out 283 lbs! With the 233 from May, that's 516 total for 2025, about 170 per hive.

The next pic is of a honey frame warming cabinet I DIYed for this year. Made it MUCH easier to harvest as it raised the temp of the honey about 12 degrees.

After each time I extract honey, I build a tower of honey supers like the one in the video. The girls will get in there and clean out all the honey residue and make the frames all clean for storage. However, it is mayhem out there for a bit.

How are the bees beating the heat? (Since we're in this heat dome) Well they fan and beard on the outside of the hives. They'll also collect water, regurgitate it on the hive surfaces and couple it with fanning for an AC effect.

Hey Everyone, I just partnered with Flowers 'n' Ferns in Burke. I'm also about halfway through my spring honey. I'm hoping it lasts until the beginning of August when I do my summer harvest. I suppose not having enough is a good problem to have.

Morning All, I had to do my spring harvest early this year since the hives were packed full. I end up getting 209 lbs., which crushed my previous spring record of 96. Has been a great spring for nectar flow, and some of my experiments with boosting production definitely paid off.
