Today, members of the Newington Police Department proudly participated in the Special Olympics Connecticut Law Enforcement Torch Run.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness and fundraising event for Special Olympics, bringing together law enforcement officers and athletes from across the state and around the world. Officers carry the "Flame of Hope" to help raise awareness, promote inclusion, and support individuals as they compete, grow, and achieve their goals.

We are honored to stand alongside these incredible athletes whose determination, courage, and perseverance inspire us all. Events like the Torch Run remind us of the importance of inclusion, acceptance, and creating opportunities for everyone in our community to succeed.

The Newington Police Department is proud to support Special Olympics Connecticut and to be part of a movement that celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of these outstanding athletes.

COMMUNITY PROGRAM ABOUT HATE CRIMES

The number of hate crimes has been steadily rising in Connecticut in recent years. You are invited to a discussion about how the state and communities are responding. Learn how hate crimes are identified, reported, and investigated -- and how you can play a role in preventing them.

WHO: Newington Chief of Police Christopher Perry, Rocky Hill Chief of Police Brian Klett, Berlin Chief of Police Matt McNally, Cromwell Chief of Police Steven Penn, Wethersfield Chief of Police Rafael Medina, the Connecticut State Police Hate Crimes Investigative Unit, and State's Attorney for Judicial District of New Britain Christian M. Watson.

FOR: All members of the public and communities are welcome.

This Memorial Day weekend, members of the Newington Police Department proudly took part in events honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

On Friday, May 23, 2026, members of the Newington Police Department participated in the annual Memorial Day Parade alongside veterans, community partners, and residents. Memorial Day serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives defending our nation. Their service and dedication will never be forgotten.

Additionally, on May 24, 2026, three Newington Police Officers participated in the Boston’s Run To Remember Half Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts. This annual event honors fallen law enforcement officers, firefighters, military members, and first responders while raising funds for families and organizations impacted by tragedy. We are proud of our officers for representing the department and community while paying tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.

The Newington Police Department would like to thank all veterans, active-duty military personnel, first responders, event organizers, volunteers, and community members who helped make this Memorial Day weekend meaningful and memorable.

Today, members of the Newington Police Department attended an awards ceremony hosted by AMR recognizing life saving incidents throughout the community.

Each year, AMR hosts this ceremony to honor the teamwork, professionalism, and quick actions of first responders who make a difference during critical emergencies.

On May 18, 2026, at approximately 4:17 p.m., the Newington Police Department arrested Charles Berry, age 66, of Newington, Connecticut, for being a Fugitive from Justice.

The arrest was made in coordination with the Virginia Beach Police Department, which holds a valid arrest warrant for charges related to a 1986 homicide in Virginia Beach. Berry was processed at the Newington Police Department and transported to the New Britain Superior Court on May 19th.

The Virginia Beach Police Department has announced that a press conference regarding the investigation and arrest is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Virginia Beach Police Headquarters.

On May 16, 2025 there were numerous complaints in the Greater Hartford Area regarding large groups of motorcycles, scooters, and ATVs operating recklessly on public roads. Patrol Officers from the Newington Police Department conducted directed motor vehicle enforcement in response to this activity. At approximately 6:18pm Newington Patrol Officers observed three unregistered scooters make an unsafe lane change. A motor vehicle stop was conducted on the vehicles.

During the course of the motor vehicle stop two of the three operators were found to be in possession of 9mm hand guns but were not permitted to carry them in the State of Connecticut. These operators were identified as Jose Velazquez and Alexis Hernandez. They were taken into custody and subsequently charged.

In addition to these arrests multiple other vehicles were stopped with varying levels of enforcement action taken. In total, on May 16th, approximately 12 illegal vehicles associated with this activity were removed from the roadways by the Newington Police Department.

Jose Velazquez was charged with:
• 29-35(a)(1) Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit
• 29-38 Weapons in a Motor Vehicle
• 14-236 Failure to Driver in Proper Lane

Velazquez was released on a $25,000.00 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court on 6/1/26.

Alexis Hernandez was charged with:
• 29-38 Weapons in a Motor Vehicle
• 14-236 Failure to Drive in Proper Lane
• 14-147(c) Improper Use of a Marker Plate
• 14-12(a)* Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle

Hernandez was released on a $25,000.00 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court on 6/1/26.

The Newington Police Department is investigating a missing juvenile report. Amiyah Richardson, age 16, was reported missing on 05/15/2026. She was last seen in Newington, CT on 05/15/2026. She is described as a black female who is approximately 5 ft tall, weighing approximately 110 lbs. She has long, black, braided hair. Richardson was last known to be wearing a brown hooded jacket, black pants, black sandals, and white head phones. Richardson was also carrying multiple bags. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Newington Police Department at (860) 666-8445 extension 5.

Detective Kelliher shared her insight, knowledge, and real-world experience with attendees, providing valuable information that helps keep our community informed and safe. Opportunities like this are essential in strengthening the connection between law enforcement and the residents we serve.

We believe that education is one of the most powerful tools in preventing crime. By continuing to inform and empower our community through awareness and information, we can work together to create a safer Newington for everyone.
