The intersection of 13th (Public) and Oakland-Tonkawa, will be closed for an undetermined amount of time for a semi that missed the intersection. Kay County District 3 will be placing road closed barricades at Main and Oakland, and on Public north of the intersection until the truck can be removed.

Kay County deputies are working overtime traffic enforcement shifts through the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office in an effort to keep the motoring public safe this holiday weekend.

This driver was traveling twice the legal speed limit.

US 77 and South Street in Newkirk will be closed for an undetermined amount of time. An oversized load broke down and will require a crane to transfer the load. Traffic is being diverted north on Plum and west on 12th to Pleasantview to get back onto US 77.

Ian Todd Ewing – Deputy Sheriff
Kay County Sheriff’s Office May 6, 1999

On Thursday, May 6, 1999, at about 5:25 p.m. Deputy Sheriff Ian Ewing, 27, was responding to assist a reserve deputy sheriff who had stopped a vehicle possibly containing three armed suspects from a burglary. Deputy Sheriff Ian Ewing had his emergency equipment activated as he approached Hubbard Street while north bound on Union Street in Ponca City. An east bound van collided with Deputy Sheriff Ian Ewing’s unit as he proceeded into the intersection. Deputy Sheriff Ian Ewing was pinned in his unit over an hour and a half and died at the scene.

Deputy Ian Ewing was survived by his wife, Shawna and is buried in Grandview Cemetery, Kaw City, Kay County, Oklahoma.

Two weeks after Deputy Ewing’s death his wife Shawna found out she was pregnant. Their daughter Angel was born on January 31, 2000.

Never leave a child in a car unattended, even for a few minutes. Cars can be deadly for kids left behind. Parking under shade or cracking the window will not help.
