🚧 The wait is over — construction begins.

Construction is officially beginning in September on Phase 1 of the new I-64 interchange at Denbigh Boulevard — the first of two projects that will add a brand-new access point to I-64 between Fort Eustis Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.

This phase includes new westbound on/off-ramps, widening of I-64, and key intersection improvements at Denbigh Blvd/Warwick Blvd and Denbigh Blvd/Jefferson Ave. Once complete, this interchange will help ease congestion on Jefferson Avenue, Bland Boulevard, and Warwick Boulevard — corridors many of our residents drive every single day.

This is the kind of long-term investment our community has needed for years, and I'm glad to see it come to fruition.

🚧 What drivers should expect during construction:

Motorists should plan for scheduled lane closures and long-term lane shifts on I-64 west at Denbigh Boulevard throughout the project. Lane closures will also occur on the Denbigh Boulevard bridge over I-64, along with lane shifts at the Denbigh Boulevard intersections with Warwick Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.

Starting as early as Aug. 31, the connector road between Pagewood Drive and Denbigh Boulevard Service Road will be fully closed long-term while it's reconfigured — it's expected to reopen near the end of construction.

Additionally, access to and from Richneck Road at Denbigh Boulevard will be permanently closed as early as fall 2026, due to the new ramp configuration.

Today Masego, PlusNTrust, and I teamed up to make sure Soundscapes have what they need heading into the new school year — instruments, supplies, and a reminder that greatness comes from right here in our community. And what better place to do it than our former high school, Woodside.

Some local youth also got the chance to have a jam session with Masego — a moment I’m sure they’ll reflect on for a long time to come.

I grew up, Uptown. My daughter is growing up, Uptown. And it means something when someone like Masego — who was shaped by this same community — comes back to invest in it. Days like today remind our youth that where you’re from can be exactly where your greatness begins.

📢 Denbigh Satellite Office Closing Aug. 31 — Fire Station Coming to the Site

The Newport News Department of Human Services will close its Denbigh Satellite Office at the end of the day on August 31, as the city moves forward with redeveloping the property into a new fire station.

The satellite office has seen relatively low use, and all services offered there — applications, EBT card reissuance, interviews, and case management — will remain fully available at the DHS Main Office:

🕐 Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to transform this property in a way that will strengthen the Denbigh community and the District for years to come. Redeveloping this site as a new fire station will enhance our ability to provide fast, reliable emergency services and improve response times for residents Uptown.

There will be no interruption to programs or services because of the closure.

I am honored to participate in Cohort 2 of the Virginia Hunt State Policy Fellows program, hosted by The Hunt Institute.

This session brings together a bipartisan network of leaders across the Commonwealth to explore critical policy considerations in early care, early brain development, and K-12 education systems.

Building a stronger educational landscape requires cross-sector collaboration and solutions. I look forward to engaging in thoughtful dialogue and bringing these insights back to serve our communities.

When most residents hear the term "data center," they picture massive hyperscale facilities. In truth, the spectrum is far broader — ranging from hyperscale developments (comparable to 57 football fields) to large, medium, small, and micro/edge facilities (some no larger than a typical bank branch or a one-car garage). Size, type, and terms of development all shape what a project actually means for a community, and those distinctions matter.

The national conversation on artificial intelligence has understandably dominated headlines as our country plans for the future. What receives less attention is the underlying reality driving that conversation: our society's data demand has grown exponentially over the past two decades, and that growth shows no signs of slowing. As our digital needs accelerate, our infrastructure must grow to match — and that discussion deserves far more attention than it currently receives.

I recognize and respect the concerns residents have raised about data center development. At the same time, I personally believe the more consequential question before us — as a country and a community — is what role artificial intelligence should play in our lives moving forward. That said, digital infrastructure planning is an important conversation in its own right, and local government has a responsibility to facilitate that conversation honestly and transparently with the communities it serves.

Yesterday, Amanda Doughty and I co-hosted a town hall to talk through Newport News' Digital Infrastructure Readiness plan. I want to be clear about what this plan is, and what it is not.

This plan is:
• A roadmap for our current assets and future needs
• A framework to align growth with community priorities
• A guide for responsible investment
• A foundation for long-term growth

This plan is not:
• A final decision
• Approval of any specific project
• A commitment to any single type of development

Digital infrastructure shapes the future of any city. Residents need reliable access to online services. Businesses evaluate infrastructure reliability and scalability when deciding where to invest and create jobs. And a stable, diversified tax base helps sustain the services and quality of life our community depends on.

Newport News is committed to being intentional and proactive in this planning process, ensuring that any future investment reflects the priorities and best interests of our residents.
