Southeast CARE Coalition

Southeast CARE Coalition The Southeast CARE Coalition is a grassroots, community-based alliance that address environmental concerns in the Southeast Community of Newport News, VA

The Southeast CARE Coalition (SCC) was established in 2011 to address “environmental” issues in the Southeast Community of Newport News, Virginia. For our purpose, the “environment” refers to the natural (air, water, land), cultural (ethnic identity and history of community), social (existing and lacking public services), economic (local business, health care cost), and political (local, state, fe

deral) components of the Southeast Community, Newport News, VA. This holistic view of the “environment” supports the public health idea (framework) that while individual behaviors are important factors of health, these factors are shaped by the social determinants of health (SDOH) experienced by individuals and communities. Our mission is to fulfill an informational void and generate action regarding environmental and public health concerns of the residents in the Southeast Community of Newport News, Virginia

With a focus on the whole of community, The Southeast CARE Coalition will ensure that its work is scientifically sound, community specific, and socially relevant. The overarching goals of the Southeast CARE Coalition are to:

1. increase the awareness and scientific understanding of environmental and public health concerns in the Southeast Community

2. develop and build the capacity of residents to sustain Coalition efforts that address environmental and public health concerns in the Southeast Community

3. generate action around our community prioritized list of environmental concerns

4. build a more resilient and sustainable Southeast Community
