Dedicated on May 28, 1966, this year will mark the 60th anniversary of Newport News Park, located at 13560 Jefferson Avenue. The park was the idea of Joseph C. Biggins, the City Manager of Newport News from 1925-1965, who purchased the land in 1925. Below is a photo of Rep. Thomas N. Downing, on the left, and Mayor Don M. Hyatt, on the right, at the dedication of the park. Also, in the photo, behind Rep. Downing is Harry D. Knight, A.J. Stodghill, and Fred Christie.

Two notable ex-players were Duke Snider, who went on to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the actor Chuck Connors. Below is a 1950 photo of Vinnie Smith and "Red" Ennis of the Richmond Colts measuring the new uniform of Al Campanis.

Newport News was a bustling village within Warwick County in the 1880's. The establishment of C&O Railroad stations and businesses drew other businesses to the village. In 1882, a Warwick County judge appointed E.L. Woodard as the first policeman of Newport News. Shortly after being appointed, Woodard was replaced with William Henry Tallman, who would become the first Chief of Police for Newport News in 1885.
