The LEAD Virginia Class of 2026 stopped by Jefferson Lab this past week for a front-row look at the cutting-edge science shaping our world.

Our Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Natalie Carter, gave the group an inside look at how we're exploring the mysteries of protons, neutrons, and atomic nuclei.

Jefferson Lab will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

While summer temperatures climb across Hampton Roads, parts of CEBAF operate at temperatures colder than deep space.

Our cryogenics team helps operate and maintain the systems that keep CEBAF’s superconducting accelerator cavities near 2 kelvin, or nearly -456°F. These ultra-cold conditions allow the accelerator to operate efficiently, supporting research and scientific discovery at Jefferson Lab.

When matter meets antimatter, both disappear in a burst of energy. Jefferson Lab researcher Tyler Hague is studying how that reaction could help scientists make more precise nuclear physics measurements.

At Jefferson Lab, postdoctoral researcher Tyler Hague is exploring how positrons, the antimatter counterparts to electrons, could help scientists make some of the most precise nuclear physics measurements ever attempted.

That work recently took him to Capitol Hill, where he represented us at the 2026 National Lab Research SLAM alongside researchers from all 17 U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories.

Amid a season of change at Jefferson Lab, Director Jens Dilling is helping guide our world-leading nuclear physics and accelerator science facility into its next era.

CoVaBIZ Magazine recently named Dilling one of its 175 Most Influential People in Coastal Virginia for 2026, recognizing his leadership as the lab advances major scientific initiatives.

Congratulations, Jens!

At the AI+ Expo in Washington, D.C., Jefferson Lab joined U.S. Department of Energy National Lab colleagues and federal leaders focused on moving advanced research into real-world capabilities.

David Lawrence, Scientific Data and Computing Department head, and Kishan Rajput, Staff Scientist, shared how we are applying AI to particle accelerators and nuclear physics, from moving large-scale experimental data between facilities, to running AI models on high performance computing systems.

This work is part of the American Science Cloud, the core infrastructure of the Genesis Mission. It encompasses user facility infrastructure to hardware that powers AI and includes systems that can automatically adjust control settings, monitor performance and be tested in digital twin environments before deployment.

Together, these efforts support DOE’s objectives to accelerate discovery, strengthen scientific computing and advance secure, reliable AI tools that drive U.S. leadership in scientific innovation. .
