It takes a village to keep our world-class particle accelerator at peak performance, and every two weeks there's a new "sheriff" in town. Known as the program deputy, this person volunteers to serve as a temporary, on-call coordinator between the various groups making sure CEBAF delivers a quality beam for nuclear physics experiments.

And you don't need to be a scientist or technical expert to fill this vital role. Just ask these office professionals who recently stepped up to the challenge:

This summer, Jefferson Lab hosted the first Christopher Newport University Graduate Summer Workshop in Nuclear and Hadronic Physics (CNUGS), a gathering that builds on the distinguished legacy of the Hampton University Graduate Summer (HUGS) program.

Congratulations to all 2026 CNUGS participants, who continued a nearly four-decade-long tradition of advanced training in nuclear and hadronic physics, along with a fresh focus on new tools in science, including AI, machine learning, and data science.

This past Friday, we welcomed U.S. Department of Energy Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil to Jefferson Lab for a day focused on the future of scientific discovery.

From real time AI and data-streaming demonstrations to accelerator operations, experimental physics and the groundbreaking of the Jefferson Lab Data Center, the visit highlighted how Jefferson Lab is helping connect science, computing and advanced research infrastructure across the DOE national laboratory system.

Here’s a look back at the day.

Today, we celebrated a groundbreaking for infrastructure designed to help science move faster across the nation: the future home of the DOE High Performance Data Facility.

HPDF will help researchers across the DOE national laboratory system share and use scientific data in new ways. From AI-driven science to real-time streaming data systems, today’s milestone reflects where innovation and discovery is headed next.

The CNUGS Summer Workshop students got an in-depth look into Jefferson Lab's research facilities during a tour last Friday.

These graduate students are diving deeper into nuclear and hadronic physics by attending world-class lectures, hands-on sessions and professional development in a dynamic, collaborative environment. We are so excited to watch all of their hard work this summer.
