The purpose of this site is to present matters of public interest. Followers of the City of Newport News Parks Division page are encouraged to submit questions, comments, and concerns related to the matter presented or to the business of this Department, but please note that this is a moderated online discussion site. Visitor comments expressed on this site do not reflect

the opinion and position of the City of Newport News government or its officers and employees. Here is our Posting Policy for participation to encourage civil discourse. The following are prohibited:

• threats of physical or bodily harm, or incitement of actions that would harm others;
• content which constitutes, incites, promotes, or encourages illegal activity;
• submission of personally identifiable medical information;
• defamatory statements;
• obscene, profane, or vulgar language;
• content that includes or constitutes sexually explicit content, obscenity, or child pornography;
• solicitations of commerce and commercial product promotions;
• spam, links to other sites, chain letters, pyramid schemes or fraudulent or deceptive messages;
• content that violates copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property rights; and
• comments that are clearly off topic of the City social media post being commented upon, or beyond the scope of the subject matter of the social media page. The Department of Communications will have the final say in interpreting these rules. The City reserves the right to reject, delete, disable or remove any content that does not comply with this Posting Policy. Content in violation of this Posting Policy will be removed by the City. In such an event, the person who submitted the post will be notified that the post has been removed for violating the City’s Posting Policy. Repeated violations will result in a 30-day suspension from that City social media page. Any additional violation(s) within the 12-month period following any suspension may result in a longer-term suspension. Individuals wishing to challenge such a removal or suspension can contact the Department of Communications at [email protected].

If you don’t like mosquitoes or bugs that bug you, then you have to love bats! These fascinating flying mammals (the only mammal that truly flies) can each eat many hundreds of insects per night, which makes them a vital part of nature’s balance. There’s so much to learn - and maybe re-learn - about our region’s native bat species, you and your family won’t want to miss this fun and informative program.

Bugs come in all shapes and sizes, and constitute thousands of different species. However, some of the things that we call 'bugs', might be something different altogether. From Ladybirds to roly-poly's and spiders: come find out what makes a bug a bug, and discover what might make them good back yard neighbors after all.

Bring your young nature lover to Newport News Park’s Discovery Center for our nature story time! On the second Wednesday of each month (March-November) we’ll have a new picture storybook about animals and their adventures in nature. Afterwards, we'll embark on a short nature walk and adventure of our own! (Weather Permitting). It’s a great introduction or reinforcement for your children’s reading and learning skills.

Join us for a 'Story and a Walk' this Wednesday, August 12th at 10 AM at the Newport News Park Discovery Center.

All are welcome, this program is recommended for ages 2 through 6.

Hoo-hoo-hoo is out there making those noises in the evening? What sights and sounds can we expect to witness as the sun dips below the horizon? Well - there's only one way to find out! Come join us as we experience Newport News Park in a whole new way!

Please dress appropriately for the weather that evening (i.e. raincoat if we are expecting a light drizzle).

We may cancel the program if we are expecting severe weather.

There are many things in nature that startle us or cause anxiety at the mere mention of it, but there are also so many wonderful things to enjoy as well. Come down to the Discovery Center and equip yourself with the knowledge of how to live around nature’s less pleasant surprises - you might find that they’re less intimidating than you once believed.
