IMPORTANT NOTE: The shelter is open daily from 10:00am until 5:00pm for owner surrenders, stray drop-offs, and owner re-claims. If staff is not available at the front desk for any of these needs, simply call the number on the door, and a staff member will be happy to assist you. The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (PRAS) is a unique collaborative supported by four separate communities: Newport N

ews, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County, Virginia. This new facility physically embodies each area's dedication to its citizens and to homeless animals. As a result, the shelter will provide necessary resources and services to the citizens of each jurisdiction in terms of education, adoption, outreach, and animal care. These services are represented by the three goals of the shelter's mission: Rehome, Reunite, and Reeducate.

🎉 CLEAR THE SHELTERS 2026 — YOU DID IT! 🎉

Alright… we’ve kept you waiting long enough.

🥁🥁🥁 DRUMROLL, PLEASE! 🥁🥁🥁

During the 2026 Clear the Shelters campaign, 279 animals found their forever homes! 🏡❤️

And when we say all kinds of animals found families, we mean it!

🐶 78 dogs
🐰 5 rabbits
🐹 5 guinea pigs
🐓 3 roosters
🐢 1 turtle
🐍 1 Ball Python
🐖 1 pig
🐟 1 fish
🐦 1 budgie

That’s 279 lives changed. 279 families made. 279 reasons to celebrate.

But we couldn’t have done it without YOU.

To every person who walked through our doors and chose to adopt: THANK YOU. You didn’t just take home a pet—you gave an animal the second chance they deserved.

To our incredible Clear the Shelters sponsors: THANK YOU for helping make adoptions possible and investing in the lives of shelter pets. Your generosity made a tremendous difference throughout the campaign.

And to everyone who shared posts, told a friend, donated, volunteered, fostered, stopped by to meet an animal or simply cheered us on from the sidelines—YOU were part of this, too. 💚

Clear the Shelters may be over, but the work continues. There are still animals waiting for their people, and we’ll keep working every day to help them find their way home.

🐾 Meet Coco! 🐾

Pupdate: She's here NOW! And NO dog meets pending?? Crazy talk- come meet this girl today 🥳

**Coco will be returning from foster around 2:30 PM today (pretty late in the day, so we can't guarantee her availability to meet with, but we're hoping for the best! Worst case, she will be available to meet with on Wednesday at 12pm- first come, first served basis 🙂)**

Coco is a 9-month-old Retriever mix who has been growing up in a foster home since she was about 8 weeks old. She’s now spayed, growing fast, and ready to find the forever family she’s been waiting for! 🏡

We intentionally allowed Coco a little extra time to grow before spaying her, giving her hormones more time to help develop a strong, healthy structure as she matured. Now that she’s spayed, she’s ready to take the next step into her forever home!

Coco is VERY much a puppy, which means she’s sweet, silly, energetic, curious—and still learning how to be a well-mannered dog. She’ll need a family who is committed to continuing her training and helping her learn appropriate ways to burn off all that puppy energy. 🎓

When Coco gets bored, she can find her own entertainment, and unfortunately, her idea of fun can sometimes involve being a little destructive. Because of this, crating will be a must when she cannot be supervised until she grows out of this phase and learns what is—and isn't—appropriate to chew on.

But if you’re looking for a dog with a HUGE heart, Coco is your girl. ❤️ She is incredibly sweet and loving with everyone she meets. Being raised in foster care has given her a fantastic foundation—she has known nothing but love, care and attention from the very beginning, and we want to find a family who will continue giving her that same love throughout her life.

And then there’s Coco’s size… 👀

This girl is going to be BIG. We’ve had similar-looking pups come through PRAS in the past, and one of them had a DNA test that came back as a mix of Great Dane, Rottweiler, Cane Corso and several other breeds. We can’t say for certain whether Coco is related to that litter, but she sure looks the part!

Based on her current size and growth, we expect Coco could eventually crest 100 pounds when she reaches her full adult size, which may not happen until around 3 years of age.

And TODAY is the LAST DAY of Clear the Shelters! 🎉

Meineke Car Care is sponsoring up to 100 pets during our final push, and we currently have just 16 sponsorship slots left! That means there’s still time to make today the day you find your new best friend—and help us get as many shelter pets as possible into loving homes. ❤️

🐾 Foster Feature Fursday: Sephiroth! 🐾

Sephiroth has been hanging out in foster for quite some time now, and honestly… we’re wondering why this boy is still waiting! 🤔

His foster family has given us the inside scoop, and this guy is basically the whole package. ❤️

🐶 Great with other dogs — even the pushy pups who boss him around!
👧 Great with children — and he’ll even let them give him a full-on spa day! 🧖‍♂️😂
🏠 Housebroken
🛏️ Crate trained when he needs one
❤️ An all-around good boy looking for his forever home!

Foster homes give pets like Sephiroth the chance to relax, be themselves, and show everyone just how wonderful they can be outside of a shelter kennel. We’re incredibly thankful to his foster family for giving him that opportunity! 💚

Now, all Sephiroth needs is someone to make his foster stay permanent. 🥹🏡

This dashing gentleman, affectionately known as Cooper, is certainly making his rounds about the city!

First stop: Meineke Car Care
Next stop: Tradition Brewing Company
And for his biggest debut yet, Cooper is heading to Casey Subaru tomorrow morning!

If you’ve been wanting to meet this distinguished gentleman, now’s your chance! Cooper will be at Casey Subaru around 12 PM, so go check him out, say hello, and see if this handsome guy might just be your next adventure buddy.

💚 Forever Family Fursday is BACK! 💚

Long time, no see! 👋 We’ve been busy behind the scenes, but we’re back at it and ready to celebrate some of our amazing shelter pets who have found their ! 🏡🐾

This week, we’re featuring Lammy! 💕

When Lammy first arrived at PRAS, this sweet girl was worst for wear. Thankfully, she was lucky enough to be welcomed into the foster home of one of our fantastic veterinary technician fosters—and just look at her now! 😍

Photos truly don’t tell the whole story, but the difference is night and day. Her transformation is a beautiful reminder of just how much love, care and time can change a shelter pet’s life. 🥹❤️

We are SO thankful for our foster program, our incredible fosters who open their homes to pets in need, and—most of all—families who choose to welcome shelter pets into their .

Congratulations, Lammy and her new family! We couldn’t be happier for you! 🐾💚
