T-minus 30 days for the Newport News Extension Master Gardener Plant Sale happening Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 9am - 4pm at Brittingham-Midtown Community Center, located at 570 McLawhorne Dr. Newport News.

Our fall plant sale features native shrubs and trees, native plants (plugs and pots) as well as houseplants, ornamentals, perennials, herbs, veggie plants, and a few surprises, too.

All plant sales benefit our Horticulture Grants for Newport News Public & Private Schools & other Master Gardener Programming.

Our Master Gardener Help Desk will be on site to answer your horticulture questions.
We'll have a native plant plugs as well as tree and shrub list available closer to the sale.
Cash/check & credit card (w/fee) accepted.

For more than a decade, Livvy Preisser has served southeastern Virginia as an agriculture and natural resources agent with Virginia Cooperative Extension- Isle of Wight where she supports producers, connects youth with agriculture, and builds relationships throughout the community.

From peanut production and livestock workshops to Virginia 4-H programs and community partnerships, Livvy sees Extension as more than having all the answers. It’s about connecting people with the right resources and creating opportunities that make a tangible difference.

This class is designed for parents and caregivers of children 12 years old or younger and focuses on:
• Practical tips for healthy eating
• Budgeting strategies
• Resources to support overall family well-being
• Free cooking utensils at each class

Class Dates: June 12, June 26, July 10, and July 24
Classes are approximately 2 hours long.

Free Cooking Classes for Caregivers 🍎
Join Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Family Nutrition Program for In the Kitchen, a free, hands-on cooking class series for caregivers of children 12 years old or younger.
Over four sessions , you’ll prepare low-cost, family‑friendly meals, learn tips for saving money on groceries, practice simple ways to be active as a family, and enjoy a meal together each week.
Participants who complete the series will receive a free slow cooker and other items to support cooking at home.
Dates & Times (4‑week series)
Fridays at 2:30 PM, June 12th, 26th, July 10th and 24th
Who can participate?
Caregivers of children 12 or younger who meet one of the following:
Eligible for SNAP
Eligible for WIC
Have a child attending a school where 50% or more of students receive free or reduced‑price meals
Registration is required. Space may be limited.

Join the amazing VCE/Newport News Master Gardeners Association in the FINAL Rain Barrel and Vermiculture Workshop of 2026!

Our FINAL Rain Barrel and Vermiculture Workshops of 2026 will be on Saturday, May 9 at 10am. Registration is open, registration for our May 9 workshops closes at end of day, Sunday, May 3, or sooner if our workshops are full! 🌿

💧 Rain Barrel Workshop
Workshop Option ($65):
Participants will work alongside Extension Master Gardener volunteers during a 60–90 minute workshop that includes:
• A short presentation on water conservation
• Hands-on rain barrel assembly
• An introduction to other NNEMG programs and projects
Each workshop includes a food-grade, 55-gallon barrel and all parts needed for conversion. Workshops begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude around 11:30 a.m.

Preassembled Barrel Option – Pick Up Only ($75):
For a small additional cost, fully assembled rain barrels are available for pick up during the workshop time frame. Barrels must be picked up between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on the selected date.

🪱 Vermiculture Workshop – $30, you’ll leave with a complete worm composting bin, red wriggler worms, and all the knowledge you need to start turning your kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil for your plants!
