Did you know that there are approximately 30,000 people in the City of Newport on any given day, while only there are 10,000 are residents? The proposed 5-cent-per-gallon gas tax and 5% prepared foods tax can distribute the burden between residents and visitors for services and facilities they all use. If it passes, the proposed prepared 5-percent food tax would generate an estimated $2,543,000 annually to fund three police officers, three firefighters/EMTs, parking enforcement and library staff, in addition to upgrades and maintenance to the City of Newport's 48 facilities and parks and one-time business grants to help prepared food vendors cover the cost of collecting the tax on the city's behalf. The proposed 5-cent-per-gallon gas tax would generate an estimated $392,000 annually for street maintenance and improvements in the city. If the proposed measures do not pass, the proposed services would not be provided and taxes would not be increased.

This is why Safe Routes To School is so important

Schools are starting. And parents will again have to chauffeur their kids because it is too dangerous for them to go there themselves.

Hey all!

The Newport Transportation System Plan Open House started today; it is online at www.newporttsp.org

An in-person TSP Workshop will also be held on Wednesday August 11, 6:00-8:00 p.m., in City Council Chambers.

Please tell everyone you know (and use social media, emails, texts, etc!) so active/accessible transportation voices are heard! Let’s make active transportation in Newport “comfortable for all ages and abilities” (definition of Level of Traffic Stress-1, or LTS-1).
. . and you are always invited to join one of our Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee meetings, every 2nd Tuesday at 5:30. Our next one is August 10, 5:30-7:00, in City Council Chambers.

The plan will guide how we develop and invest in our transportation system to meet the current and future needs of Newport and surrounding areas. It helps determine which projects, policies and programs may receive funding.

We are all prisoners in a system that falsely promised us freedom.

This makes me cautiously optimistic. Now if only we can get the Newport city government onboard better than in past........

Because this is an unofficial page, a solo effort by me as the current chair of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and I am merely a volunteer for the city, I am explicitly not allowed to use BPAC or any variation of the term in the page name or handle.

Help me pick a better name!
