DON'T BE THE VICTIM OF A PHONE SCAM....

One of our community members was almost the victim of a phone scam recently. It is a reminder to us all to be vigilant and suspicious of un-solicited phone calls. Generally, the caller will state they are with (insert any official government agency or bank) and informs the potential victim their accounts have been compromised, or perhaps they owe money and gives some sort of intricate story that requires the potential victim to go purchase gift cards, put money on them and then give the card number to the caller to get the matter cleared up. They tell the potential victim not to hang up, or tell them a warrant will be issued if they do not comply, etc. They convey a sense of urgency and try to keep you on the line until they have the information they need to complete the scam.

No official government entity or bank is going to tell you to purchase a gift card and to give them the card information to settle a debt or clear something up. Please do not do this. It is just a scam. Once you give them the card information, there is no way to get your money back.

If you become the victim of a phone scam, please call and make a report. You will likely also be referred to make an online report with iC3.gov (the federal government) and to have your name flagged with one of the credit bureaus for any potential fraudulent activity on your credit report.
