**NEWS RELEASE**
PEND OREILLE COUNTY BURNING CONTROLS IN EFFECT

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that all outdoor Rule Burns (Debris Burns) in South/Mid Pend Oreille County are prohibited effective at 12:01 a.m. May 29, 2026. Burning with a DNR Permit is allowed subject to the conditions on the permit. Campfires are allowed in designated campgrounds. There are currently no burning restrictions in Northern Pend Oreille County.

The locations of the affected areas of the County are:

South/Mid Pend Oreille County

Fire Danger: Moderate (FDRA: Foothills)
Burn Ban: Rule burning is prohibited

Comments:
All Rule (debris) burning is prohibited. Burning with a DNR permit is allowed subject to the conditions of the permit. Campfires are allowed; however, campfires are not allowed on state land except in DNR campgrounds.

Recreational fires are allowed if the fire meets all of the following conditions:
The fire
(1) Is attended at all times
(2) Is no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet and no taller than 2 feet
(3) A charged hose or five gallons of water is present along with a shovel and
(4) There is a fire break/non-combustible surface of at least three feet around the fire.
In the event that a fire escapes, the property owner is responsible for any and all fire suppression costs.

All other areas North of the Above:

North of: Hwy 20 at Alaska Ln N (MP 399)
and
North of: Riverbend Loop (South entrance) and LeClerc Rd N (MP 10.5)

Fire Danger: Low (FDRA: Kaniksu)
Burn Ban: No Burn Bans in effect.

Comments:
If you have a written permit, burning is allowed subject to the conditions of your permit. Rule burns, not to exceed 10 feet in diameter, are allowed for forest debris. Campfires are allowed; however, campfires are not allowed on state land except in DNR campgrounds.
