Our team was recently welcomed for a tour at Dakota Prairie Composting in Shakopee, Minnesota.

This site is where all loads of food scrap bags from the Food Scraps Pickup Program are delivered after being sorted. There, they begin the multi-month journey of becoming compost. The finished compost can be used in landscaping or gardens to improve soil quality.

Thank you to our tour guide, Ben, for sharing about the important and interesting work at Dakota Prairie Composting!

Items like straws, plastic utensils, coffee pods and loose bottle caps are too small to be sorted properly at recycling facilities. Instead of being recycled, they often fall through sorting equipment and end up in the trash.

Tips to recycle better:
♻️ Keep plastic caps screwed onto plastic bottles before placing them in the recycling bin.
♻️ Don't put loose small items in your recycling.
♻️ As a general rule, if an item is smaller than a credit card, it should go in the trash.

Looking to reduce small plastic items altogether? Take the challenge and join Plastic Free July: PlasticFreeJuly.org.

Take a look at what was able to be salvaged from this 90+ year old home in Stillwater. ♻️ 🛠️️

We followed the recovered materials from their original home to the Better Futures Minnesota warehouse in Minneapolis, where they'll be installed in a new project to be enjoyed for years to come. Thanks to the City of White Bear Lake mayor, city council and staff who joined us on a tour of the R&E Center in Newport last week. Tours provide an overview of how waste is managed in Ramsey and Washington counties, how the facility works to recover value from the waste stream and the programs available to help residents and businesses reduce waste and recycle better.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect, share information and continue collaborating with our local partners across the region! Interested in taking a tour? Learn more at RecyclingAndEnergy.org/Tours.

The waste hierarchy doesn’t end at recycling. For materials that can’t be reduced, reused or recycled, energy recovery is the responsible next step – and far preferable to landfilling. Closing waste-to-energy facilities doesn’t make waste disappear; it just changes where it goes.
