Yesterday was a dark day in Cocke County.

Numerous area agencies, including several from surrounding counties, spent harrowing hours rescuing people from many dangerous situations. Some were stranded, some were in the water, and sadly, one person lost her life.

It has been said that yesterday’s flooding behaved very differently from what we saw during Hurricane Helene in 2024. Our county was permanently changed by that event, and flooding is not always as predictable as it once may have seemed. Yesterday, water appeared in places where flooding had not previously been seen, with some areas reportedly reaching depths of up to 8 feet.

Newport Rescue Squad had personnel and equipment deployed to assist with flood-related operations throughout the day. Following the victim's recovery operation by swift water rescue personnel, first responders gathered together and a prayer was said before she was placed into our care for transport.

We offer our deepest sympathies and prayers to her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Mother Nature is a beautiful lady in these parts, but we must remember that she can also be unpredictable and unforgiving. Please stay extra vigilant during these weather events. We appear to be getting a break from the rain for the moment, but more may still be ahead.

05/28/2026

Please be aware that conditions are becoming dangerous in several areas of the county.

Rivers, tributaries, and streams are coming out of their banks. Some roadways are becoming dangerous or impassable, and low-lying homes near waterways may be in jeopardy.

Do not attempt to drive through standing or moving water. You do not know how deep it is, what may be underneath, or whether the roadway is still intact.

If rising or rushing water is threatening your home, do not delay. Leave immediately and get to higher ground.

Stay alert. Stay safe. Stay alive.

Saw a post on another Facebook group this morning that read; “I saw a bunch of lights down ‘such-and-such’ road at 3:30 this morning. What was going on?”

Yes, it’s a common occurrence that first responders and/or law enforcement are out there at weird hours overnight. Truth is, first responders are out there at all hours of the day and night handling emergencies, searches, vehicle crashes, medical calls, fires and countless other situations. It’s only natural for folks to be curious when they see those lights off in the distance.

Want an inside look at what really happens during those late-night calls? Join the first responder agencies that are involved in these.

Volunteer rescue squads, fire departments, and other emergency organizations are always looking for capable people who are willing to step up and help their communities. Newport Rescue Squad is no exception. Yes, getting out of bed at 3:30 a.m. isn't always fun, and yes, we might even grumble about it later that morning when we’re trying to stay awake. but when the community needs help, we answer that call.

Be a part of that. Search out your area volunteer agencies and join up. As a side benefit, you might get to know what those wee-woo and fire department lights were all about at 3:30 in the morning!

Come by Newport Rescue Squad any Tuesday evening before our 7:00 meetings to meet folks and get an application. 111 Underwood Road in Newport.

Newport Rescue Squad would like to recognize Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is more than a day when the banks are closed. It is more than an extra day off work or the unofficial start of summer. It is a day set aside to remember the men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

The freedoms we enjoy each day were not obtained without cost. They were secured through the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who never returned home to their families.

As you spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember those who gave everything so that we may continue to enjoy the liberties we often take for granted.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

This morning, AMVETS Post 75 and Boy Scout Troop 497 gathered at the Newport Rescue Squad to conduct a proper retirement ceremony for worn and unserviceable American flags.

The ceremony was carried out with the dignity and respect our nation's flag deserves. We were honored to provide the location for this event and invite you to watch a few moments from today's ceremony.

All are welcome to bring worn flags to be retired in a dignified manner. I've been told that there is an impressive ceremony associated with this process.

The Newport Search and Rescue Team were pleased to assist Grassy Fork and Del Rio Fire Departments in today’s search for the missing motorcyclist. Late this afternoon, the missing motorcyclist was located a short distance into North Carolina.

Search efforts began yesterday evening with personnel from the Del Rio Fire Department and were suspended shortly before midnight. This morning, searches resumed in the Grassy Fork area. Newport Rescue Squad Search and Rescue personnel supplied nine searchers, three vehicles, and two UTV’s to augment their efforts.

Numerous search assignments were designated and carried out in various areas of the county focusing on locations that might appeal to an off-road motorcyclist.

Late this afternoon, local search efforts were suspended while Madison County Search and Rescue (NC) personnel continued operations in their area. Shortly thereafter, information was received that the individual had been located by Good Samaritans. We are very grateful for their actions, as well as the efforts of all search personnel involved in the search. We understand the individual was transported to an area hospital; however, we will not be providing any information regarding his condition.

It would be impossible to accurately count the number of people involved in this search effort, but we are thankful for every single one of them. Searches like this are truly a team effort, and we appreciate the dedication shown by everyone who gave their time and energy to help bring this incident to a successful conclusion.

Last night, in conjunction with our weekly meeting, Newport Rescue Squad personnel began our annual refresher training for the Vanessa K. Free EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operation Course).

This course was developed following the tragic death of Ms. Free in a crash caused by the improper and illegal operation of a law enforcement vehicle responding under emergency traffic.

Operating a rescue squad vehicle under normal routine conditions carries tremendous responsibility. That responsibility increases significantly when responding with lights and sirens. It is absolutely critical that we keep not only our personnel safe, but YOU — the motorists, families, and communities we serve — safe as well.

At Newport Rescue Squad, we take emergency vehicle operations very seriously. Training such as this helps reinforce safe driving practices and keeps those principles at the forefront of everything we do.
