🐾 These are just a few of the furry faces staying at our shelter.

Since opening, we’ve cared for 26 animals and provided 365 pet stays — with an average of 7 pets each night. That’s a lot of paws to feed, shelter, and keep warm. 💛

A heartfelt thank you to Ann and her team at Coastal Health Care for raising $246 through recycling to support emergency vet care, food, bedding, and supplies. And thank you to Julia for lovingly preparing homemade meals for 17-year-old Zuko — what a beautiful act of compassion.

If you’d like to support our furry guests — by collecting recycling or sponsoring a pet with a small monthly donation — please contact Andrea at 541-272-9647.

Dutch is a two-year nursing student from OCCC who chose to complete his volunteer hours with us at the Community Shelter and Resource Center, despite having many options. We were truly lucky to have him. Dutch was someone we could always count on; he took the time to connect with our guests and truly became part of our team. He will be greatly missed. We wish him all the best as he continues his journey into public service and a career devoted to helping others.

First Quarterly Team Meeting – CSRC Winter Shelter Team

Today we held our first quarterly team meeting, and it was exactly what we needed.

We took a serious photo… and then a fun one. Why, because the work we do is heavy, and the people we do it with make it possible.

Every night this team shows up to crisis, trauma, and exhaustion and still leads with compassion, patience, humor, and heart.
Saving lives, one night at a time isn’t just our slogan — it’s our reality.

Then the team shared something that reminded all of us how deeply connected we are.

They presented a framed “Photo of the Year” that symbolized how we stand tall for our people, protect one another, and treat every person as human. It was signed with handwritten messages from the team and reflected the heart behind everything we do.

We are all in this together , and when we show up for each other and for our guests, we can get through anything.

Beyond proud. Beyond grateful!

This work isn’t easy, but it matters.
Every sunrise reminds us why we keep going—for dignity, safety, and a chance to begin again. Saving lives one night at a time

Some people lead by title.
She led by showing up.
Claire helped bring the winter shelter to life—not just through policy or planning, but by standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the people we serve. She always called them her people—the ones we house, the ones we keep safe, the ones who too often feel invisible.

These moments, captured with the permission and trust of the people she stood beside, tell the story of who she truly was.

She volunteered in the shelter, served meals, stood in line with our guests, laughed with them, listened to them, and treated every single person with dignity. On Christmas, she sang carols with our guests as they waited—bringing warmth not just to the room, but to hearts that had gone a long time without it.

One night, a guest quietly asked,
“Are we in trouble? Why is there a commissioner here?”

And the answer was simple:
“She’s here for you.”

At first, there was nervousness. Then something shifted. One guest said words we will never forget:

“So we’re not bad people… if someone like her is here for us, she must really care.”

And she did.

She brought dignity into a space where dignity is often taken away. She brought comfort without judgment. She reminded people—without saying it out loud—that they mattered.

These moments, these photos, these quiet acts of kindness are her legacy. She didn’t just help create a shelter. She helped create belonging.

She touched so many lives.
She brought hope where there was fear.
And she will be deeply, profoundly missed.

Thank you for loving your people so fiercely.
We will carry that forward.

A special dinner centered on community, teamwork, and showing care for our guests.

Commissioner Walter Chuck, alongside our team, the Newport Lions Club, and Newport Elks Lodge, came together to help prepare and serve a warm meal and to distribute stockings filled with thoughtful goodies to our unhoused neighbors. From behind-the-scenes preparation to hands-on help throughout the day, everyone stepped in where needed with the shared goal of making our guests feel welcomed, respected, and supported.

We are grateful for the time, effort, and collaboration that made this possible. Moments like these reflect the true power of community—coming together through simple acts of kindness and service.

Thank you to all who showed up to serve our guests.
