Pend Oreille Fire District #4

Pend Oreille Fire District #4 Proudly serving the citizens of Pend Oreille County! https://www.pofd4.org/ On January 1, 1979, we officially became a fire district.

Pend Oreille Fire District 4 is a combination volunteer/career district which covers 96 square miles in the central part of Pend Oreille County. Our county-wide mutual aid agreements allow us to serve all members of the county when called upon by our neighboring fire districts. Fire District 4 is also the home of one of the largest newspaper print producers in the western United States as well as

various other commercial, recreational and residential residents. Our members respond out of three stations on a 24/7 basis to provide a first due response for fire, rescue, emergency medical services, extrication and hazardous materials. On October 5, 1978, the voters approved the formation of Pend Oreille Fire District 4.

Voters Affirm Merger: Pend Oreille County Fire Protection Districts 2 and 4 Unite for a Stronger Future

On February 10, 2026, the residents of Pend Oreille County Fire Protection District 4 spoke clearly and decisively. In a special election, voters overwhelmingly approved—by nearly 76%—the merger of Fire District 4 into Fire District 2. This landmark decision marks the culmination of years of collaboration and shared commitment to public safety, and it paves the way for even better service to our entire community.

As Fire Chief of Pend Oreille County Fire Protection District 2, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the citizens of what was formerly Fire District 4. Your trust in our management, our firefighters, and our vision means more than words can convey. You placed confidence in a partnership that has already proven its value through years of mutual aid, joint training, and coordinated responses. Now, that partnership has become permanent, and we are honored to welcome you fully into our family.
For too long, challenges like staffing constraints and budget pressures have tested our ability to deliver the highest level of protection. But together, we are addressing those issues head-on.

The residents of the former Fire District 4 will now benefit from the full resources of District 2's robust advanced life support emergency medical system—bringing paramedic-level care directly to more calls. Response times will improve as we integrate stations, personnel, and equipment into a unified structure. These enhancements aren't just operational upgrades; they represent a promise to every family, every business, and every visitor in our county: we will be there when you need us, faster and better prepared.

Pend Oreille County has made remarkable strides in recent years. Our fire services have evolved to meet growing expectations—delivering professional, compassionate care that our citizens have come to rely on and deserve. This merger builds on that momentum, ensuring that progress continues for everyone. We are much better together than we are apart.

On behalf of the Board of Fire Commissioners of Pend Oreille County Fire Protection District 2, I also extend heartfelt appreciation to the Board of Fire Commissioners of the former Fire District 4. Your leadership, dedication, and willingness to prioritize the greater good have made this possible. Together, we have chosen unity over division, and strength over separation.

To all our firefighters—past, present, and future—who serve selflessly every day: thank you. Your commitment inspires us.

Looking ahead, the leadership team of the newly combined District 2 is deeply appreciative of the trust placed in us. We are excited to serve the expanded community with the same dedication that has defined us.

Our goal remains unchanged: to raise standards, enhance response capabilities, and protect every life and property in Pend Oreille County to the very best of our ability.
We are one team now, one mission, one community. Together, we are stronger, safer, and ready for whatever the future brings.

Thank you, Pend Oreille County. We look forward to continuing to earn your trust every single day.

Rain or shine, paid or volunteer. Firefighters were training on hose drills. Deployment of attack lines and reloading them for time. We are working that every firefighter can deploy an attack line and flow water inside of 2 minutes upon arriving on scene.
