Social Media Policy:
The Town of Newport and its Divisions and/or Departments use social media to interact with residents, businesses, and visitors about public issues related to our jurisdiction. Please note this is a moderated online discussion site and subject to North Carolina Public Records Laws, and e-discovery laws and policies. All comments and content shared on our government-sponsored s
ocial media sites must pertain to items within the jurisdictional control or authority of our governmental unit. The Town of Newport and its Divisions and/or Departments reserve the right to delete submissions that do not meet the purpose of this site as set out above. The following are examples of unacceptable social networking content and comments. Please note this list is not intended to be all-inclusive:
1. Any content or comments that do not relate to the jurisdiction or authority of the jurisdiction itself.
2. Profane or obscene language or content as determined by the profanity filters offered through each social media platform (such posts result in the comment/content being blocked through the social media’s profanity filter).
3. Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetrates discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, or any other protected class of people.
4. Duplicate posts by the same author (the original post will be left intact assuming it otherwise follows the guidelines of acceptable comments or content).
5. Solicitations of commerce and/or, including content that contains gratuitous links (links or references to other relevant governmental webpages or official government sites are acceptable).
6. Promotions or content related to political organizations of any type.
7. Advocation of illegal activity; or those that compromise safety or security of the public.
8. Infringement on copyrights or trademarks.
9. Confidential or non-public information, including but not limited to any personally identifiable medical information and any content that violates the legal rights of the owner of said content.
10. Content, comments, and/or links that are defamatory, libelous or irrelevant to the topic shared by the host.
11. Sexual content or links to sexual content.
12. Any other unlawful content, comments or links. Please note that the opinions and comments expressed in the comment section on the Town of Newport’s social media site(s) do not reflect the opinions or positions of the Town, its officers or employees. The Town of Newport was granted a charter from the State of North Carolina on January 30, 1866, but its history begins almost 150 years before that time. The Newport River which weaves through Carteret County and empties into the Beaufort Inlet, was the highway over which early settlers traveled to the "rich upland country". Around the landing at the upper part of the river, the Town of Newport sprang up. Barges unloaded products destined for the port at Beaufort which included lumber, to***co and naval stores which shipped from Beaufort to other colonial ports in the West Indies. In the early part of the 18th century, the settlement was also called Shepardsville, named after a large landowner by the name of Shepard. The origin of the name “Newport” can be traced to two prevalent theories: 1) the town was called New Port” to distinguish it from the “Old Port “ of Beaufort; and 2) the early influx of Quakers from Rhode Island called the town “Newport” in honor of their native Newport. Today, Newport is a close-knit community that maintains it small town charm with a population of about 4,500 residents. Many of the residents are military families connected to the Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station just 7 miles away in Havelock. Since Newport is a mere 5 mile drive to Morehead City along Highway 70, it is an attractive destination for those wanting seeking a family friendly community and easy driving distance to the beach. Residents and visitors enjoy the annual Pig Cooking celebration in the spring and they can discover how soldiers lived during the Civil War at the Newport Historical Association. The Town is operated as a council-manager form of government, which includes a mayor, a five member town council and a town manager. The Town provides police, fire, utilities and public works to its citizens. There are three public schools, operated by Carteret County, located within the Newport jurisdiction: Newport Elementary School, Newport Middle School, and Carteret Pre-K Center.
