Traffic Stop Results in Weapon Arrest

On August 17th, 2025, at approximately 11:19 P.M., a Newport Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling northbound on State Route 141 commit a moving violation as well as an equipment violation.

A traffic stop was initiated on Boxwood Road and the Officer contacted the operator, who was identified as Cody Mcgonigal, 24 of Wilmington, Delaware.

During the course of the traffic stop, the Officer learned that Mr. Mcgonigal was concealing a handgun in his right front pocket, leading to his arrest. A further search of Mr. Mcgonigal revealed a box cutter style knife which was also concealed in his waistband.

Mr. Mcgonigal was transported to the Newport Police Department where he was charged with the following offenses:

-turn signal violation
-improper muffler
-carrying a concealed deadly weapon a firearm
-carrying a concealed deadly weapon
-failure to have proof of insurance in possession

Mr. Mcgonigal was arraigned via videophone at the Justice of the Peace Court 11 and issued a $2,620.00 secured bail. Mr. Mcgonigal was turned over to the Delaware Department of Correction after failing to post bail.

Pursuit Suspected Identified and Apprehended

On July 24th, 2025, a Newport Police Officer observed a motorcycle traveling westbound on W Justis Street without displaying a registration. The Officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the motorcycle however, the operator elected to flee from the Officer.

Through a coordinated effort between members of the public, along with our investigative measures, the operator was positively identified as John Lawhead, 34 of Newark, Delaware. The Officer obtained an arrest warrant for Mr. Lawhead for the following charges:

-Disregarding a Police Officers Signal
-Resisting Arrest
-Failure to display a registration
-Driving while suspended
-No motorcycle license
-Operating a motorcycle without a helmet and or safety glasses

With the assistance of the Delaware State Police, John Lawhead was apprehended in Newport on August 2nd, 2025.

Mr. Lawhead was also wanted by the Newport and Newark Alderman’s Court for unrelated matters.

Mr. Lawhead was arraigned at the Justice of the Peace Court 11 where he was issued a $3,400.00 cash bail. Mr. Lawhead was remanded to the Delaware Department of Correction after failing to post bail.
