Now is the time to refresh your memory about Evacuation Levels.

Oregon uses a three-level evacuation system to keep residents informed and safe. Be familiar with “Be Ready, Be Set, Go Now!” notifications:

🟢Level One – BE READY (Green): Stay aware of the wildfire threat and get prepared. Pack your go-kit, check emergency contacts, and ensure those in vulnerable situations (older adults, children, individuals with disabilities, and livestock owners) are ready to evacuate if needed.

🟡Level Two – BE SET (Yellow): Be prepared to leave at any moment. This indicates significant wildfire danger. Voluntary evacuation is encouraged—especially for those needing extra time to relocate safely.

🔴Level Three – GO NOW! (Red): Evacuate immediately! This means extreme danger is present, and it is unsafe to remain in place. Emergency responders may not be able to assist further. Leave immediately without gathering belongings. After evacuating, do not return until officials declare it safe.

Tomorrow, there will be an emergency response exercise taking place at the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital complex in Newport.

Early Saturday morning, community members who have volunteered to be pretend victims will arrive at the Center for Health Education to receive their assignments and moulage – special effects makeup depicting injuries. The training will extend into clinical areas of the hospital (where patients are not seen on weekends), so Emergency Department staff can train on the triage process, skills, patient flows and tracking.

Local participants in the exercise include Lincoln County first responders, Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, Lincoln County Emergency Management, City of Newport, Lincoln County Public Health, U.S. Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Life Flight Network.
State participants include Oregon Disaster Medical Team, OHA’s Health Security Preparedness and Response program staff and SERV-OR volunteers, Oregon National Guard, Salem Hospital, and Oregon Health & Sciences University.

🔥 It's Wildfire Awareness Month and 5 feet could save your home.

Benton and Lincoln Counties are teaming up this May to help our communities get ready before fire season hits. Fire experts are forecasting a potentially tough year, and local emergency managers say the time to prepare is now not when smoke is on the horizon.

Here's something powerful: clearing the area within just five feet of your home of combustible materials can significantly lower the risk of wind-blown embers igniting your house. That means small weekend projects like cleaning out your gutters, moving patio furniture away from the house, swapping bark mulch for gravel near your foundation, and covering vents with fine wire mesh can make a real difference.

Resources are available to help you create defensible space, harden your home, and plan for evacuations all in one place at preventwildfires.oregon.gov.

Have you started creating defensible space around your home? What's one step you've already taken or plan to take this month? Drop it in the comments and help inspire your neighbors!
