⛑️Third Major Rescue At Popular God’s Thumb Trail Since Spring Break

Another dramatic rescue unfolded Wednesday morning near Lincoln City’s popular God’s Thumb trail after a person who had been reported missing overnight was found stranded approximately 150 feet above the beach on a steep and unstable shale cliff.

North Lincoln Fire & Rescue was dispatched shortly before 6:45 a.m. on August 27, with information from 911 callers helping crews locate the person.

Multiple agencies, including the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team, responded to the scene, while Depoe Bay Fire used a drone to help determine the safest way to reach them.

Fortunately, crews were able to access the person from the beach and guide them safely down the cliff without needing a rope rescue.

The individual was not injured and was reunited with family.

🛟This appears to be at least the third major rescue in the God’s Thumb/Roads End cliff area since spring break, serving as yet another reminder that one of the Oregon Coast’s most popular viewpoints can also become one of its most dangerous places when hikers venture into the wrong terrain.

This summer has been a busy fire season but team members were able to get some training in on various skills from rescue scenarios, drones, line guns, and many more. We are looking forward to our fall Technician class and hope to add a few new team members.

Today the team will be out at Olalla reservoir for the Georgia Pacific community day. We will have a high line/zip line and display some of our equipment.
Last month marked our 15th since we formed as a team. At the May drill two of our members completed probation and move to full response for calls. Congratulations to Hunter Jensen from Toledo Fire and Scott Cairney with East Lincoln Fire & Georgia Pacific ERT.

This has been a busy spring for the team. In May the team hosted and participated in a Rope Rescue Specialist class with Crux Rescue. Specialist class involves advanced methods and skills in rope rescue along with a better understanding of physics within the rope rescue operations.
