Bulk Trash and Other Trash Collection

Bulk trash is oversized waste that is too large to place in your trash container. Bulk trash is separated into household items and yard/tree debris. Bulk trash collection is only available to residents currently being served by the City of Newport. Rules and limitations are listed below. To request a Bulk Trash Collection, call the City of Newport Street Department at 423-623-5246 with the address to be added to the department’s pickup list. The city has one grapple truck to pick up large amounts of bulk trash and several flat beds that pick up the smaller amount of bulk trash.
Items that are considered Bulk Household
Appliances, boxes/bags of household dry goods, furniture, lumber/fencing, mattress/box-spring, patio furniture, and refrigerators/freezers. Items that are not allowed include hazardous waste, construction and demolition debris, manufacturing process debris and loose or dangerous refuse. Hazardous waste requires proper disposal.
Place bulk items for collection
Bulk waste should be placed as close as possible to the curb or roadside and 3 feet away from any obstructions such as mailboxes, telephone poles, garbage containers, etc. Do not place items underneath overhead wires or tree limbs. Do not block the passage of vehicles, pedestrians or drainage. Household items must be separated from yard waste piles as these items are disposed of at different locations.

Reminder the Newport Street Department no longer pick up tires as a curbside service. Citizens will need to make their own arrangements for disposal of tires.

Sanitation Department

Garbage service is provided one time per week. City of Newport currently has two sanitation trucks with a three man crew on each truck.

Do not place any of the following in the trash:

Dead animals and fowls
Body waste
Hot ashes
Rocks
Concrete
Bricks
Shingles
Asbestos based materials

Each owner occupant or other responsible person using or occupying any building or other premises within the City of Newport where refuse accumulates or is likely to accumulate, shall provide and keep covered a maximum of three (3) refuse containers.

Containers shall be maintained in good and sanitary condition. Any container not conforming to the requirements of this or having ragged or sharp edges or any other likely condition to hamper or injure the person collecting the contents shall be promptly replaced by the owner after notice by the City of Newport.

The following premises shall use portable refuse containers:

Single family dwellings;
Multi-family dwellings containing no more than (2) two units;
All businesses located in the central business district (C-1 Zone) whose containers are not serviceable by mechanical means.

Portable refuse containers shall be constructed of strong and durable material, rodent and insect proof and not readily corrodible. Such containers shall have a capacity of not more than 32 gallons and not less than 20 gallons, and when filled, shall weigh not more than 75 pounds. Refuse containers hall be equipped with tight fitting lids or covers to preclude the free access of flies, insects and to prevent the containers from collecting water during rain or snow.

Where alleys are used by residents, containers shall be placed on or within 6 feet of the alley line and not placed in the travel portion of the alley.

Where Streets are used by residents, containers shall be placed adjacent to and back of the curb, or adjacent to and back of the ditch or street line.

Refuse is collected Monday-Friday to ensure that your garbage is collected please have your can out before 7a.m. If trash is placed out after the crews have been in that area they will not return to collect it until your next designated pickup day. Remove the cart or cans by midnight on the day of collections.

The following fees apply to all refuse collections provided by the City of Newport:

From these premises using portable refuse containers, shall be collected once per week, free of charge.

Household refuse collection schedules will be adjusted for the following holidays:

Good Friday (Friday before Easter)
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Veteran’s Day
Thanksgiving (Thursday & Friday)
Christmas Eve
Christmas Day

Changes to your scheduled collection day during these holidays will be announced through newspaper articles, and local radio stations (WNPC and WLIK) also the Newport Street Department page.

Brush Pick-up Policy

The Brush Collection service is part of the Street Departments Right-of-Way Division and consists of one grapple type brush truck and one full time operator. This service is available to all City of Newport residents. The Street Department also has a small pickup truck with one full-time employee that will pick up small amounts of brush for residences.
After brush is placed in a pickup location, please call the Newport Street Department at 423-623-5246 ext. 1 with the address of where the brush is located. At that time the office will place you on a pickup list for your brush to be picked up. You may call after the office is closed and leave the address on our voicemail.

TO HELP US BETTER SERVE YOU:
• All limbs or brush should be placed adjacent to the street behind the curb or off the pavement.
• Do not place brush on top of water meters, behind vehicles, mailboxes, and utility poles or under guy wires.
• Limbs should be no larger than 12 inches in diameter and no longer than 10 feet.
• RESIDENTIAL BRUSH & LIMBS ONLY, no leaves, grass clippings, pine straw, no household garbage, furniture, carpet, lawn equipment, metal, appliances, construction materials, glass, concrete, lumber, cross ties, fence posts, landscape timbers, or other processed wood.
• Brush must be cut at the address where the brush is being picked up at.
• No stumps or roots will be picked up, and brush must clear of any dirt.

INVITATION TO BID

The City of Newport will be accepting sealed bids from qualified vendors for the purchase of hot mix asphalt and paving for the City of Newport Street Department, located at 140 Locust Ave., Newport, Tennessee 37821. All interested vendors may pick up bid specifications and instructions at the Newport Street Department at 140 Locust Ave., Newport, Tennessee 37821. Bids are to be effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Bids must be submitted to Newport City Hall, 300 East Main Street, Newport, Tennessee 37821 no later than July 13, 2026, at 10 a.m.

The City of Newport has the right to accept or reject any or add bids and to accept the bid deemed to be in the best interest of the City of Newport Street Department. All inquiries or requests for additional information relative to these bids should be directed to Tina Matthews, Finance Director at 423-623-7323.

GARBAGE COLLECTION
SCHEDULE FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY, 2026

The City of Newport Street Department, Recycling Center and Newport Convenience Center will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2026, to observe Independence Day. The Street Department, Recycling Center and Newport Convenience Center will be re-opening on Monday, July 6, 2026. Household Garbage and Recycling that would have been collected on Friday, July 3, 2026, will be collected on Monday, July 6, 2026, along with Monday’s collection. All Household Trash and Recycling must be at your pickup location by 7:00 a.m.

The City of Newport Street Department will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, to observe Memorial Day. The Street Department will be opening on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Garbage that would have been collected on Monday, May 25, 2026, will be collected on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, along with Tuesday’s collection. The same schedule is also for the City of Newport’s Convenience Center. Please have trash to the pickup location by 7:00 am on you pickup day.

The City of Newport is seeking applications for a part-time seasonal Slope Mower/Light Equipment Operator. This person performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks including operating slope mower, trash collecting, patching, street sign replacement and repairs, and any other duties that are performed daily in the department. Work hours will be Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and pay will be $19.45 Hr.
Application and job description may be picked up at the Newport City Hall or found on the City of Newport website. The deadline for applications will be Monday, May 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. All applications must be turned into Newport City Hall, 300 East Main Street, Newport TN 37821. NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE.

The City of Newport Street Department will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026 to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Street Department will be re-opening on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Garbage that would have been collected on Monday, January 19, 2026 will be collected on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 along with Tuesday collection. The same schedule is also for the City of Newport’s Convenience Center. Please have garbage out for pick-up by 7:00 a.m. if trash is not to the roadway when employee’s come to pickup, they will not be returning to pickup until the next week.
