Oregon Albacore Commission

Oregon Albacore Commission Wild Oregon Albacore caught for you to enjoy by independent, family fishermen all along the Oregon coast. Savor the loins, cans or pouches all year!

The Oregon Albacore Commission is an industry-funded state commodity commission engaging in communication, education, research and promotional programs that benefit the production, harvesting, handling, processing, marketing, and use of Oregon Albacore tuna. The fast, powerful Oregon Albacore are hand-caught, one at a time, and handled with care all through the process. The boats tow lures called

“jigs” from fishing lines attached to outriggers, that are extended on either side of the boat. Tuna is also caught on individual poles held by fishermen using bait. Once an albacore bites, the fisherman lands it by hand, removes the barbless hook, and transfers it to ice for the fresh market or to an on-board freezer. In both cases the fish is preserved in as fresh a state as possible. This type of fishing, sometimes called trolling, hook and line, or pole-caught, produces the very best quality, and eliminates inadvertent catch of other types of fish (called by-catch) such as sea turtles and dolphins. The fishing practices of the Oregon Albacore fleet are a source of pride. These high standards have been commended by international environmental groups, such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which certified the fishery as well-managed and sustainable. The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch awarded Oregon Albacore with a “Best Choice” because of the abundant stocks and environmentally friendly fishing methods.

It’s Day 5 of our 10 Days of Tuna celebration! 🐟🎉 There are countless ways to enjoy Oregon-caught Albacore tuna, and Battery 245 Brewing Company in Warrenton is a perfect example of why buying local makes such a difference. Battery 245 is a member of the Oregon Coast Seafood Trail, which is a regional culinary guide that connects visitors directly with local, sustainable, Oregon-landed catches from Astoria to Brookings. It highlights fisher-family-run eateries, dockside markets, and restaurants to help keep more local seafood on local plates.

Located just steps from the Warrenton Marina, Battery 245 works directly with Oregon commercial fishermen to purchase fresh, Oregon-caught seafood straight from the source. Rather than relying on preportioned products, the restaurant brings in whole fish (including seasonally available Albacore tuna), fillets them in house, and serves it in several dishes in the restaurant including fish & chips, fish sandwiches, tostadas, and pasta specials.

This August, celebrate Oregon Albacore Month by seeking out restaurants like Battery 245 that proudly serve fresh, locally caught Oregon Albacore.

It’s Day 4 of 10 Days of Tuna! For Georgia Haight, fishing is a family affair. 🎣 She fishes for Oregon Albacore aboard the Newport based F/V Mystic Isle, where weeks at sea are simply part of life. Those long trips make the moments spent together during offloads, while cleaning the boat, or while filleting fish all the more special.

As a mother, Georgia is raising the next generation to understand where their food comes from and what it means to earn a living on the water. She hopes her daughters grow up with the confidence to know they belong on deck just as much as anyone else.

It’s Day 3 of 10 Days of Tuna! What makes Oregon Albacore such a healthy choice? 🐟💪

Every summer, schools of Pacific Albacore arrive off our coast after feasting on nutrient rich schools of anchovies and sardines fueled by Oregon's coastal upwelling. The result is a clean, rich flavor, a moist texture, and the highest level of heart healthy omega 3s of any tuna.

Oregon fishers catch juvenile Albacore that are 3 to 5 years old and typically weigh between 10 and 30 pounds. Because they're younger and smaller than Albacore caught in many other parts of the world, they naturally contain lower levels of mercury while delivering an exceptional amount of beneficial omega 3 fatty acids. 🌊

Whether you're enjoying Oregon Albacore at a restaurant along the Oregon Coast or preparing fresh, frozen, canned, or pouched Oregon Albacore at home, you can feel good knowing you're choosing one of the most nutritious and sustainable seafoods available.

August is Oregon Albacore Month, and we're celebrating with 10 Days of Tuna! 🎉🐟

From August 1-10, we'll introduce you to the fish, the fishermen, the ports, and the businesses that make Oregon's Albacore fishery so special. You'll learn where to find fresh, frozen, canned, and pouched Oregon Albacore, discover delicious ways to cook it year round, and see why it's one of the most sustainable and nutritious seafood choices available.

Day 1: Meet the Fish!
👀 Oregon Albacore, also known as longfin tuna, are built for speed. Their sleek bodies, large eyes, and extra long pectoral fins help them travel thousands of miles across the Pacific, often swimming more than 50 miles in a single day.
❤️ Caught young by Oregon's troll fleet, they're naturally high in heart healthy omega 3s and much lower in mercury than larger tuna species.
⚖️ Most Oregon caught Albacore measure 21 to 30 inches long and weigh about 14 pounds, making them the perfect size for premium fresh loins and exceptional canned tuna.

Follow along through August 10 as we celebrate one of Oregon's most iconic sustainable seafoods! 🌊🐟

🐟 Ever wondered how Oregon's albacore is caught? It's one of the most selective fishing methods in the world.

🎣 Every albacore is caught one at a time using hook and line. Most Oregon vessels troll by towing colorful lures called jigs behind the boat from long outriggers. Some fishermen also catch albacore using individual poles with live bait. It's a true craft that takes years of skill and experience to master.

🌊 Success depends on finding the right conditions. Albacore are most active when ocean temperatures range between 58 and 64 degrees, and fishermen must keep their boats moving at just the right speed to entice the fish to strike.

🧊 As soon as a fish is landed by hand, the barbless hook is removed and the fish is dispatched, bled, and immediately placed on ice or into an onboard freezer. In just a matter of minutes, it's preserved at peak freshness.

💙 Because every fish is caught individually, Oregon's troll-caught albacore fishery has extremely low bycatch and avoids unintentionally catching species.
