Join us for our Victim Services Unit Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on September 10th and help support an incredible cause right here in Monroe County.

Sheriff Troy Goodnough brought the Victim Services Unit (VSU) to Monroe County, and VSU is 100% volunteer and 100% funded by donations.

Our VSU advocates are called out by deputies during some of the absolute worst moments a person or family can experience fatal crashes, suicides, domestic violence, fires, assaults, death notifications, and other traumatic situations.

They stand beside victims and families when they need someone the most.

VSU advocates may:
• Assist with death notifications alongside deputies and chaplains
• Stay with families while they wait for loved ones to arrive
• Provide food and clothing
• Arrange and pay for hotel accommodations (if needed)
• Provide transportation
• Help families navigate what comes next when they may not know what to do or where to turn

Every dollar raised goes directly toward helping victims and supporting our advocates. Donations also help send advocates to specialized training through the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association so they can continue providing the best possible support to the people of Monroe County.

DTE Swan Creek Substation Expansion Project
DTE is committed to reducing power outages by 30% while cutting outage times in half by the end of 2029. As part of this commitment, we’re rebuilding the infrastructure and expanding the Swan Creek substation that powers Newport, Michigan.
Substations are a critical part of the electric grid, stepping down voltage so electricity can be delivered safely and efficiently to homes and businesses. Expanding the Swan Creek Substation will add capacity and strengthen reliability as energy demand continues to grow in the area.

This $37 million project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, will improve the system’s overall reliability and better support the community’s long-term energy needs. Customers served by the upgraded equipment and substation will experience fewer and shorter outages, especially during storms.
What’s included in this project:
• Installing two new substation transformers, increasing capacity to nearly four times the current rating.
• Adding five new underground circuits, including nearly two miles of underground cable running east and west along Newport Road.
• Rebuilding 1.5 miles of poles, power lines and electrical equipment with stronger, more durable materials that can better withstand extreme weather.
• Trimming trees near power lines to prevent them from falling onto electrical equipment and causing outages.
• Installing smart grid devices that help quickly identify the location of damage during an outage. This allows crews to respond faster and, in some cases, reroute power to reduce the number of customers impacted while repairs are made.
• Connecting customers in the area to an upgraded electric substation that will help ensure power continues to be delivered safely and more reliably to homes and businesses.

I have personally reached out to some of you on the Newport Road Work. Over the last two years, we have worked with Berlin Township planning on this project and currently, we are working collaboratively and proactively with MCRC and MDOT. The project on Newport Road will likely run late June through late Fall.

This work consists of installing 13 manholes and approximately 1.5 miles of conduit on the South side of Newport Rd (Eastbound lane), between War Rd and the entrance to DTEs substation located behind the Marathon gas station. This work requires a full shutdown of the Eastbound lane, South of the road’s centerline and only allowing local resident traffic to pass through the work areas. Flagging crews will be onsite every day of construction to help direct traffic safely. Safety is a number one priority of DTE for both the public and our workers.

PROJECT BEAUTIFICATION 2026**

It's that time of year again! We are now accepting nominations for well-maintained homes in Berlin Charter Township for our Project Beautification 2026. You can submit your nomination by mail, via email at [email protected], or by calling us at 734-586-2187, extension 1. Residents can make nominations, and the property must be located within Berlin Township.

Categories for nominations include residential, rural residential, mobile homes, farms, and commercial properties.

Nominations are open until September 10, 2026. Our goal is to honor residents and business owners who enhance our community's appearance and to inspire others to do the same. Winners will receive a plaque at the Township Board Meeting on September 28, 2026.
