UPDATE: The railroad crossing has been fixed as of 5:30pm

TRAFFIC ALERT: Railroad Crossing Malfunction at Railroad Square.

Newport Police Department is aware of the Railroad Crossing Malfunction at Railroad Square. The crossing lights are currently activated even though no train is present.

Canadian Pacific Railroad has been notified and has dispatched a crew to address the issue.

Drivers are understandably cautious when approaching the crossing. Please proceed through carefully to help reduce traffic delays.

We will update this post once the crossing has been repaired.

Newport Police Department Arrests and Charges Man with Lewd and Lascivious Conduct

NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department arrested and charged a man with Lewd and Lascivious Conduct following an investigation into a Department of Children and Families report.

AMISADAI SANCHEZ-CORDOVA, AGE 53, of HOLLAND, was arrested and charged with:

Lewd and Lascivious Conduct

On April 30, 2026, the Newport Police Department received an intake from the state Department of Children and Families (DCF) which alleged that SANCHEZ-CORDOVA had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a juvenile. Through a preliminary investigation, officers determined that SANCHEZ-CORDOVA also engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with another individual. Both the juvenile and other individual resided in the same household as him.

Through a subsequent investigation, led by Newport Det. James LeClair, it was determined that SANCHEZ-CORDOVA attempted to make nonconsensual sexual contact with an individual in the home. He also forced the individual to watch a video that was pornographic in nature.

It was also determined that SANCHEZ-CORDOVA made sexual comments and abusive threats toward the juvenile.

Newport Police arrested SANCHEZ-CORDOVA on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

SANCHEZ-CORDOVA was held on $10,000 bail and will be arraigned in Orleans County Superior Court today.

Newport Police Department Arrests Man on Charges Including Assault of a Protected Professional, Obstruction of The United States Department of Justice

NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department arrested and charged a man with assault of a protected professional, obstruction of justice and several other crimes after the Department responded to a fight on the Newport Boardwalk on Thursday.

GEROMY J. WELLS, AGE 41, of NEWPORT, was arrested and charged with the following:

* Assault of a Protected Professional
* Assault of a Protected Professional; Assault with Bodily Fluids
* Obstruction of Justice
* Violations of Conditions of Release
* Disorderly Conduct

On Thursday, June 23, at about 7:17 p.m., the Newport Police Department responded to the Newport Boardwalk for report of a fight.

On scene, police located WELLS, who appeared to be extremely intoxicated, prompting police to take him into protective custody.

Once in custody, WELLS became extremely aggressive, and started kicking and headbutting the police cruiser, making verbal threats toward officers and spitting at them.

In the process of transporting WELLS to North Country Hospital to receive medical clearance, he continued to act aggressively by spitting on and attempting to bite officers.

WELLS was medically cleared and transported by Newport Police to Northern State Correctional Facility.

In a subsequent investigation, police also learned that WELLS had appeared in court in June 2026 and was issued conditions of release that stated WELLS may not engage in violent, threatening, or tumultuous behavior. Police also learned he has a very lengthy criminal history, including 13 convictions.

WELLS will appear in Orleans District Court today.

UPDATE: power has been restored

Power Outage: Newport City is working on dealing with a tree on a power line(Lake Road/Parker St.) that has caused loss of power to a large portion of the city. Some traffic lights are not working. Please use caution at intersections and avoid the area of Lake Road and Parker St.

TRAFFIC ALERT UPDATE : Motor Vehicle Crash
Newport Police, Fire, and EMS personnel have cleared the scene of a motor vehicle crash on East Main St near the Walmart entrance and the roadway has been reopened.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Motor Vehicle Crash

Newport Police, Fire, and EMS personnel are currently on scene at a motor vehicle crash near the intersection of East Main Street and the entrance to Walmart. Both lanes are closed, and motorists are asked to seek alternate routes and avoid the area. Further updates will be provided, and the roadway will be reopened once the scene is cleared.

TRAFFIC ALERT 191 Access Rd Bridge:

Starting next Monday July 6th, Winterset Construction will be starting a project to remove the existing bridge pavement, perform concrete repairs to the deck/fascia/sidewalk/headers, installing waterproofing membrane and re-paving with associated approach work.

The project is located 0.2 miles East of the junction with US5.

VT191 (Access Road) will be closed from Western Ave to US5 for the duration of the project. There will be a signed detour via Western Ave to East Main Street (US5) to Causeway Road (US5).

The Contract Completion Date is November 13, 2026.
