SPOFR has multiple units committed in Spokane County as mutual aid and state resources. This is an early start to this wildfire season and our prayers go out to those who lost homes and property. Brush 31 and Type 1 Engine 31 remain on the fire line. Chief 301 led a task force of Spokane City, Valley, County, Stevens County and federal units to provide structure protection in the area of Scenic Lane.

That's a wrap on the 2026 Lieutenant orientation week! SPOFR is excited to bring on our new officers, with over 60 years of professional fire service experience from three different states. The training was exceptional and they are ready to immediately serve our community!

The week culminated with an evening of family and fellowship at a SPOFR family dinner, thank you Lt. Jeff Borrero for cooking. As each individual starts their respective shift this week (M, W, F), look forward to bios and getting to know your new public service leaders.

SPOFR constituents: We have been fielding requests for information regarding a live fire acquired structure training burn District 2 and the Kalispel Tribe conducted on Thursday, May 28th, within SPOFR jurisdiction.

We did not have any prior notification of this, and it is incredibly unusual for outside agencies to conduct acquired structure burns outside of their jurisdiction. Due to the highly dangerous and intricate nature of live fire structure training (particularly before a major wind event), SPOFR, as the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) is deeply concerned that this was conducted in our jurisdiction without any oversight or notification.

We are working with our risk management partners, state oversight, and neighboring agencies to insure this incident will be addressed.

Please know if ANY significant training event is happening within SPOFR, we will make constituents aware prior and adequately inforn immediate neighbors.

Take care of each other,

Chief Shane Stocking

Per the State, who controls burning, BURN BAN is now in effect for rule burns, permits may still be obtained through DNR. The fire district has zero control over these bans, please see the WA State Burn Portal for additional information.

***Early season wildfire***... and some fun!
On memorial day, SPOFR was dispatched to a fast moving grass and timber fire in the Spring Valley area. A large response, quick attack, and a fantastic relationship with DNR that allocated immediate air resources kept this one small.

On a lighter note, SPOFR commandeered a kind neighbor's boat and another's lift to make access to a boater in medical distress. Luckily there was no serious medical emergency and we continue to embrace our unofficial motto of "whatever vehicle necessary."

Thank you Cassie for your excellent EMT continuing education class on Airway Management.
We all loved hands on experience helping a paramedic with a McGrath medical camera ( see picture below) and Titus’s hands on set up demonstration for airway management.
