MAY 30, 2023: The following information regarding the Hyde County Emergency Services is published, with permission of the writer:

We have lost 13 employees in a month's time frame. All below have resigned;

David White-EMS Director
Jeremy Kaiser-Deputy EMS Director
Hank Stowe-EMS Training Officer
Kimberly Perry-FTO/Supply Officer
Tavoccous Elliott-Paramedic
Joshua Ashmore-Paramedic
John Kluttz-Paramedic
Coleman Davis-Advanced EMT
Ryan Swink-Paramedic
Mike Reece-Paramedic
Saundra Hensley-Paramedic
Erich Byrd-Paramedic
Sophie Holt-EMT

All below are on leave;

Add to that that Dustin Lerch-Paramedic is out for 6-8 weeks on leave due to an accident and Surgery.

Treigh Peoples-Paramedic/FTO is on FMLA leave for the extended future.

We are extremely understaffed and under budgeted, we cannot accomplish almost anything we need to this year. We need a new EMS station on Ocracoke, we need 100,000$ in repairs to the mainland base, we need 4 more personnel for a QRV on Ocracoke giving them guaranteed 24/7/365 healthcare access, we need 8 more personnel on the mainland for an additional EMS unit due to call volume. The entirety of our EMS ambulance fleet is failing and in the shop constantly, we need 5 new EMS units. This list goes on and on. This will only continue until Hyde County catches up with the times of supply and demand and increases the pay rates for EMS providers. The reason providers are leaving is because we do not wish for our names and reputations to be attached to the coming failures.

County administration will tell you that state and local resources will help us and there will be no interruption in services. They may, but this comes with a steep long term cost to tax payers when a solution could have been reached locally.

County management will also note that we are competitive with all surrounding counties, oh except for Beaufort and Dare, but they have more resources and that's not a fair comparison. The comparison that needs to be made is statewide, our Paramedics do not come from surrounding counties, they come from mid state and our pay is WAY behind, why would employees travel all the way down to Hyde for less pay, more fuel cost, higher food cost and higher daily life cost?

This leaves nobody in charge of Narcotics, DEA Forms, DEA licenses, NCDHHS licenses, nobody with know-how in charge of supply inventory, stocking numbers, and ordering. Nobody for purchase orders, paying bills and check requests. Nobody to do payroll. Nobody for hiring, firing, disciplinary actions. Nobody for recruitment, retention, scheduling. Nobody for training and compliance and keeping credentials current. Nobody for budget creation and management. All of these things can only be handled and turned over by current management. Nobody for the continuous truck maintenance with vehicles in the shop daily, and nobody to answer to or call upon for day to day operations, guidelines, and questions.

Public Service Announcement - RED LIGHTS on Vehicles

Have you ever seen someone driving behind you with a RED flashing light? What does that RED light mean?

In NC, flashing RED lights displayed (with no BLUE flashing lights) on a vehicle indicates a volunteer firefighter is responding to a 911 call in their personal vehicle. They are responding to their firehouse, or to the scene to provide the manpower needed for the emergency.

If you see a passenger car with a flashing RED light, please consider treating it like any other emergency vehicle; we (your Community Volunteers) are requesting the right of way - this is a courtesy light. When it is safe to do so, please pull over to the right and come to a complete stop, so that we may travel safely past.

Many people don't realize what these flashing RED lights are for. Every second counts. Help us help you. You never know, we could be responding to an emergency for a friend, or one of your loved ones.

Thank you
