Keep our Lakes, Ponds & Rivers Clean: Compost or Bag Your Leaves! 🍂🍂

Please bag, mulch or compost your leaves and do not rake leaves into the street (unless they are concurrently being collected by a landscaper) and never push them into storm drains. Leaves blocking storm drains can cause flooding and create safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians. Residents are encouraged to remove leaves from storm drains, if feasible; or you may call Customer Service (617) 796-1000 (M-F 8:30 am – 5:00 pm) to request a drain be cleared.

The last week of yard waste collection is December 7th. This collection schedule is weather dependent.

Newton residents are welcome to drop-off yard waste at the Resource Recovery Center located at 115 Rumford Ave.

Help protect our yard waste collection staff
• All bags/barrels must be less than 50 gallons or 50 pounds
• Branches must not stick out of the bag/barrel unsafely
• Bags/barrels not in compliance will be rejected

The Latex Paint Exchange Program is CLOSING on October 30 at the Resource Recovery Center.

Remember: not open on Saturdays.

See attendant to drop off paint or to "shop" for paint to use. All drop-offs must be approved by attendant.

Accepted: Usable, latex paint. Cans must be less than 10 years old and more than half full. If the paint has ever been frozen (i.e. stored in a garage or shed over winter) it is no longer usable and must be dried out and disposed as trash.

Limit: FOUR 1-gallon cans and FOUR sample cans per household per year

NO oil based paints/stains. These materials are accepted only during household hazardous waste events.

♻️ Have a bulky item you no longer need? Give it a second life.

Now through the end of October 2026, all items collected in Newton’s bulky item pickup program will be sorted and viable items will be donated to local charitable organizations. This reuse initiative makes it convenient to keep good-condition items out of the waste stream and to support local non-profits helping our community.

Pickups are available by appointment for only $20 per item.

Green your Halloween at Newton's 7th annual Pumpkin Smash. Stop by to smash your pumpkin, touch-a-truck, donate excess candy or costumes, and grab a bite from a local food truck all while learning about managing your food waste and composting!

Don't forget to remove any candles or decorations from your pumpkin and to bring any excess candy and costumes to be donated.

For Indigenous Peoples' Day, trash, recycling, and yard waste WILL BE COLLECTED on a normal schedule, there will be NO DELAY in collection. Please have all materials at the curb by 7am.

Veterans Day will have NO DELAY as well.

Meet the Ripeness Ranger 🍎
They know exactly how and where produce ripens — because storage location changes everything.

Some produce (apples, avocados, tomatoes, bananas) gives off ETHYLENE gas as it ripens, which speeds up RIPENING and SPOILAGE in whatever’s nearby. Keep those separated from produce that’s sensitive to it, like leafy greens and potatoes, if you want things to last.

Separately: onions and potatoes should never share a bin. It’s not about ethylene, potatoes give off moisture that makes onions rot faster, and onions release gases that make potatoes sprout sooner. Different drawers, different problem, same result: keep em separated!.

Fridge or counter also matters. Tomatoes, bananas, and potatoes stay on the counter — cold kills their flavor and texture. Most everything else that’s already ripe goes in the fridge to slow things down.

It's Food Waste Prevention Week. Time to Meet the Cart Strategist 🛒

They buy only what they’ll actually use. Before they ever get to the store, they check the fridge, freezer, and pantry to see what’s already there. Then they shop with a list, built around that inventory, not around whatever looks good in the aisle.

That one habit kills two of the biggest sources of wasted food at once: buying food you already have (so now there are two of something that needed one), and buying food with no plan for how it’ll get used.

The next household hazardous waste collection day will be on Saturday, October 3rd at the Resource Recovery Center (115 Rumford Ave.)! Call Customer Service at (617) 796-1000 to schedule an appointment.

They’re only six more events left in 2026!

Common HHW chemicals brought in include: Chemicals such as cleaners, aerosols, disinfectants, spot remover, nail polish and remover, pest control and houseplant products, pesticides, gasoline, waxes, polishes, oil and lead-based paint, paint thinner.

These items can also present hazards to children and pets if left around the house, so make sure you are storing products safety before disposing of them properly!
