We welcomed a full house of business, industry and civic leaders from across Harvey County today for our 2026 HCEDC Annual Meeting at the Meridian Center in Newton.

Jeremy Hill, Regional Executive & Assistant Vice President for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, presented an economic outlook for what’s happening nationally, statewide and right here at home. From tariffs and inflationary pressures to wages, employment and consumer behavior, he provided key insights, trends and perspectives to help businesses and manufacturers calculate risks and move forward in our current economy.

Thank you to the many businesses, industry partners and civic leaders who joined us today. Growth doesn’t happen because of any one organization. It happens when a community works together, and we’re grateful for everyone helping move Harvey County forward.

Nothing brings a community together quite like ice cream. Nearly 175 people came out for GAF’s community ice cream social. It was a chance to meet the team, ask questions and hear more about what’s ahead for production and hiring.

We loved seeing so many people show up, connect and welcome GAF to the community. This is what growing together looks like.

A groundbreaking is more than the start of a new facility. It's a sign of confidence.

Last week, we joined APAC to celebrate the groundbreaking of its new materials processing plant in the Newton Industrial Park.

Our first conversations with APAC began nearly two years ago as we helped explore potential sites and evaluate options for the project. Seeing that work become reality is a reminder that growth often starts long before the shovels hit the ground.

The project brings new jobs, new investment and another example of the industrial momentum taking shape in Harvey County. As companies continue to invest here, we're seeing the power of strong partnerships and long-term planning come to life.

From robot bartenders to industrial automation and conversations with site selectors, there was no shortage of ideas at Automate 2026 in Chicago, with more than 1,000 exhibitors and 50,000 attendees.

Executive Director Beth Shelton spent time exploring emerging technologies, workforce trends and the factors shaping future industrial projects and investment decisions.

Events like these help us bring fresh ideas, new relationships, and valuable insights back to Harvey County. Preparing for growth means staying connected to what's next.

Today we joined our regional economic development partners at the Wind Surge game to exchange ideas, discuss emerging opportunities, and collaborate on the issues impacting communities across south-central Kansas.

We're fortunate to be part of a region that believes we're stronger when we work together. And we got to root for the home team while we were at it.

Watch this quick spotlight on Jorge, HCEDC's summer intern. Jorge's curiosity led him to learn the piano. After arriving at Bethel College, he fell in love with the instrument's sound, taught himself to play, took lessons and now serves on the worship team.

This willingness to learn something new, embrace a challenge and keep growing is one of the many reasons we're excited to have Jorge with us this summer.

Welcome to Jorge Batista, Harvey County Economic Development’s summer intern.

Jorge is a junior at Bethel and helped their Tennis team do something that hasn’t been done in nearly 30 years; winning the regular season conference title AND the conference tournament.

Coming to Newton by way of Maracay, Venezuela, Jorge feels a real connection with the community already, enjoying the small town feel and how everyone seems to know each other.

Jorge will be working with the HDEDC team on admin support, marketing and learning more about business retention.

The latter is something Jorge truly hopes to get a better understanding of this summer. He’s excited to see, from an insider perspective, how organizations and industry connect, communicate and build relationships to enhance economic growth in communities.

When asked if he could spend the day with one person in Harvey County, Jorge quickly said Sal Lujano, branch president at People’s Bank and Trust. “I see the influence he has in the community,’ Jorge said. “His success and his Latino background are inspiring. I’d love to learn the things he did to accomplish all that he has, and hear his ambitions for the future.”

One of America's largest honey companies is growing right here in Harvey County.

The Newton City Commission approved a three-year tiered grant this week to support Barkman Honey expansion in Newton, at 1700 SE 9th. The project will enhance the company’s processing, light manufacturing, small-batch assembly, and research and development capabilities.

Headquartered in Hillsboro with facilities nationwide, Barkman Honey's continued investment in Newton and Harvey County demonstrates the value they see in growing where strong partnerships, a skilled workforce and future opportunities exist.

Barkman is the largest honey packer in the United States, packing nearly 100 million pounds of honey annually from facilities across the United States.

We were excited to help Barkman Honey invest, innovate and grow in Harvey County. After all, the sweetest growth is the kind that stays right here at home. And that’s definitely something worth buzzing about.
