This week the Catawba County Hazardous Materials Response team participated in training on spill control and containment utilizing a rollover prop on loan from the Charlotte Fire Department,. Participating agencies included Newton Fire Department, Conover Fire Department, Hickory Fire Department, and Catawba County Emergency Services.

The Catawba County Hazardous Materials Response Team provides a local critical capability for managing chemical, biological, radiological, and other hazardous substance incidents within the community. The technician-level team is capable of performing advanced hazardous materials operations including product identification, leak control, decontamination, air monitoring, and technical reference support in accordance with national standards. The Team's response capability enhances local resilience and reduces reliance on outside resources during critical incidents, while coordination with fire, EMS, law enforcement, and regional partners contribute to the team’s effectiveness and preparedness.

As we approach Memorial Day we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. The Missing Man Table — a simple, powerful tribute set in memory of those missing in action and prisoners of war: an empty place setting with a white tablecloth, a single red rose, a lit candle, an inverted glass, a lemon slice, and a folded flag. Each item is symbolic — the empty chair and inverted glass represent the absence of comrades; the rose and candle symbolize hope and remembrance; the lemon recalls the bitter fate of captivity; and the flag honors their sacrifice. Please take a moment to reflect, thank a veteran, and remember the fallen and the missing who never came home. 🇺🇸
