Bill Gruman and his wife, Sandra, live in Grinnell. Their children include Adam and Ryan, both Eagle Scouts, Monica, and Emily, who is currently a member of Troop 354 in Newton. The principles of Scouting are a part of their everyday lives.
Billโs Scouting adventures began with Cub Scouting in Lamont, Iowa, with amazing pinewood derby cars and fun camporees. He crossed over to Troop 81, braving rain storms and mosquitoes through many campouts and even a hurricane at the 1985 National BSA Jamboree in Virginia. He returned as a Webelos Leader, then Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster as sons, Adam and Ryan, progressed through Scouting with Troop 1062 in Osage, Iowa. A couple highlights include bringing 6 emergency response agencies together in organizing and hosting a District fall camporee, an extended hiking trip below the rim at the Grand Canyon, and both boysโ Eagle ceremonies. He moved on to supporting Troop 313 in Grinnell, then as District Committee Chair for the Woodland Trails District, the Mid-Iowa Council Board of Directors, and now volunteers with Troop 354 in Newton where daughter, Emily, is a member.
He has served the community as a volunteer firefighter since 2002, first on the Osage Fire Department and then on the Grinnell Fire Department. He coached middle and high school cross country or track programs for 25 years. This includes a 12-year stretch as the Osage boys cross country coach, with 10 state qualifying teams and 26 individual state qualifiers. He has led different FIRST Lego League teams for 7 years, beginning in 2010, and a FIRST Robotics Competition program at Grinnell High School since 2016. Service to his church has also included leadership roles through Parish Council and Knights of Columbus, many committees, and helping at events. The family was named the 2017-2018 Iowa Knights of Columbus Family of the Year.
