Newton’s recycling program needs your help to recycle right and reduce contamination in our recycling carts.

Acceptable items for recycling: paper (such as junk mail or empty brown paper bags), paperboard, flattened cardboard, and empty bottles, jugs, jars, tubs, or cans made of plastic, metal, or glass.

NO recyclables in paper or plastic bags. This has been identified as the biggest recycling contamination culprit in recent audits of Newton’s recycling. If in doubt, throw it out.

This summer, staff will be conducting inspections of residential recycling carts at the curb. Carts with contamination will be tagged and carts with recurring contamination will be rejected.

Went on a (very hot) walk through West Newton Square yesterday afternoon, to talk about and experience the frustrating traffic signalization with Ned Codd, Newton's Director of Transportation. Representatives of local businesses attended, as did the new Economic Development team of Lauren Berman and Cheryl Lappin, we all as my Ward 3 City Councilor colleagues Pam Wright and Julia Malakie.

Codd admitted that the situation "is a challenge", and had plenty of reasons why it hasn't been, or may be, fixed. He said it aims to "strike a balance" for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. In my view, none of those user groups is feeling great about it currently. Not to mention how some of the mechanical aspects are just no functioning.

He said they are doing a traffic count today.

*Harding Street

As posted by contractor (All States MaterialsGroup). This is to accommodate roadrepair work (maintenance overlay).

Fabulously informative joint Office Hours yesterday at the supremely cozy Auburndale Community Library (where I used to take my now 40 and 42 yr old "kids" to toddler story time when we lived in the 'Dale), co-hosted by fellow City Councilors Cyrus Dahmubed and Brittany Hume Charm.

Topics our constituents wanted to talk about included:how to help local businesses, public gathering spaces, housing, LGBQT rights and safety, access to and transparency of public records, how to streamline the permitting processes, ICE in Newton, Charter Reform and gun violence prevention.

Not to mention the wonderful snacks provided, treats from nearby Breadsong Bakery, chai by Cyrus, baklava from Greece.

Thanks to the folks who showed up to listen, talk, ask and share. You are our people!

Newton’s Winter Parking Ban goes into effect today at 5 pm on the streets, 9 pm in all municipal parking lots. Get your errands, shopping and restaurant dinner in before the storm, then hunker down and stay cozy at home.

Trash and recycling pickup will be delayed one day next week due to the storm.
