Join us in showing community support for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics as participants make their way through Newton!

We’re creating a “Main Street Torch Run Cheer Zone” at 320 N. Main Street in the parking lot on Tuesday, June 3, where community members can gather to cheer on and encourage the walkers as they pass through town-from North Dillons to South Dillons.

Bring your encouragement, community spirit, signs, lawn chairs, or simply yourself! Whether you choose to stand along Main Street, sit with friends, or gather near the back of your vehicle, the goal is simple: line Main Street with positivity and support for an incredible cause.

Let’s help create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for everyone participating in the Torch Run! 💙🏃‍♂️🔥

Yesterday’s kickball showdown between the Newton Police Department, Opportunity Academy staff, EmberHope staff, and students brought the competition, the laughs, and plenty of memories.

The students came ready to play… but the adults came ready to WIN. 😅

From big kicks to questionable base running decisions, everyone had a blast spending time together and building connections outside the classroom. Thank you to everyone who participated, cheered, and made it such a fun event.

For this year, staff’s egos are thankfully intact. Students-better luck next year!

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is back this year and we would love your support. Stay tuned for additional details as the day approaches- we would love to see Main Street lined with supportive community members helping cheer everyone on!

📆 June 3, 2026 | 10 am - 12 pm | North to South Dillons

"The Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics (LETR) began in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas (USA), Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to increase awareness of Special Olympics. He also saw it as an ideal way to get local law enforcement personnel involved in within the Special Olympics community. The LETR was quickly adopted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), now recognized as the founding law enforcement organization for the LETR. Thirty-two years later, that flicker has become a roaring flame of stability for Special Olympics athletes worldwide."

This week, during National Police Week, we’re taking a moment to recognize that policing is about so much more than tickets, traffic stops, catching the bad guys, or high-speed chases.

At the Newton Police Department, community policing is about showing up in ways both big and small.

It’s having breakfast with students at Newton schools.
It’s building relationships and trust through conversations, laughter, and connection.
It’s hosting community camps and events that bring families together.
It’s playing donkey basketball to help raise funds for schools.
It’s visiting classrooms to teach students about safety, service, and what officers do each day.
It's getting in a impromptu snowball fight at the local library.
It's assisting with hunter safety education class.

It’s organizing toy and school supply drives for local children and families in need.
It’s reading books to curious young minds.
It's playing a game of kickball with students and connecting with them-even if they win!
It’s cheering on kiddos at the finish line of a local race.
It’s racing students during Friday fitness activities and creating moments they’ll remember.
It’s giving back to local businesses and organizations.
It's participating in community events, parades, walks, etc.
It’s standing shoulder to shoulder with community partners during awareness months, local initiatives, and times of need.

This is community policing in motion.
It’s about partnership, presence, service, and compassion.

During National Police Week, we thank the men and women of NPD who work every day to build a safer, stronger, and a more connected community- not just through enforcement, but through relationships.
