At 12:20 this afternoon, all Newtown companies were dispatched to a structure fire in our first due area. Newtown CT Police arrived first and confirmed a working fire in the garage. All occupants exited the home but 2 pet cats were unaccounted for. Hawleyville FD chief Dave Janofsky was first fire chief on scene and established command. Engine 551 was first arriving apparatus. First attack line was stretched into the home and interior crews began fire suppression. A second line was stretched to the rear of the home. Engine 551 nursed off tanker 559 and Dodgingtown Fire department tanker 229. Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the garage and minimized damage to the living quarters. One indoor cat was found alive by firefighters and was safe. The other cat is an indoor/outdoor cat and is believed to be safe and is expected to return home. No firefighter injuries. The incident was declared under control at 12:55pm, just 35 minutes after dispatch. Newtown Fire Marshals office is investigating the cause. 🔥MULTIPLE STRUCTURE FIRE RESPONSE🔥

Last night our town was hit by a storm cell that brought severe lightning and heavy rain. We responded to numerous calls including several structure fires. While already operating at a fire alarm, all Newtown companies were alerted to a possible fire in the basement of a private home in our first due area of town. Engine 551 Tanker 559 and Tanker 557 responded. SHVFD assistant chief 403 was first to arrive and confirmed a working fire and called for a line to the basement. An attack line was stretched from engine 551. We had a gas fed fire in the wall. It was first hit with a water can and then hoseline. The fire was held to the area of origin and the homeowners were able to return home.

While operating there, we were requested mutual aid with engine and manpower to the town of Monroe for a working fire. Engine 552 responded. Monroe knocked the fire quickly and we were released.

We were then requested to Capitol drive for propane tanks on fire next to the house. Tanker 557 responded. Fire was out on arrival and we cleared.

Lastly, at 22:50 we were requested to Sandy Hook for a confirmed structure fire. There was a detached outbuilding down a hillside several hundred feet. There was already partial collapse on arrival. Fire was extinguished to prevent spread to the woods. The building is a total loss.

This morning, all Newtown Fire companies were dispatched to a structure fire in Newtown Hook & Ladder first due area. Newtown dispatchers reported they had received multiple calls from passerby’s stating building was on fire. Engine 551 and Tanker 557 responded from our company. Fire was held to business of origin. Adjacent businesses sustained mainly smoke and some ceiling damage. Stepney Fire Department was standing by as RIT. Newtown Fire Marshal was on scene and is investigating. Newtown Ambulance , the medic and Newtown CT Police also responded. The businesses were unoccupied at the time of the fire and there were no firefighter injuries.

Last night we were dispatched to a general fire alarm in at a commercial plaza in our first due area. Engine 551 and tanker 559 responded. First in crews confirmed activated alarms but no visible fire. As crews checked the structure, we encountered smoke and an odor of burning from one business. One line was stretched dry. The assignment was upgraded bringing in Newtown Hook & Ladder and SandyHookVolFire&Rescue . The roof was laddered and interior crews searched the building further. Fire marshal response was also requested. Ultimately, it seems to be an issue with a rooftop HVAC unit. Building was ventilated after isolating the troubled appliance. Newtown FM will follow up with property owner rep. We thank NHL and SHVFD for their assistance.

This past weekend, all companies were dispatched to a possible structure fire in our first due area. A storm came in and house was struck by lighting. Homeowners reported smoke on the second floor of their single family home and had safely evacuated. We arrived and had nothing showing from the exterior but did confirm smoke to the upper living area. The wall was opened and we found charring, but no active fire. Newtown Fire Marshal investigated. Fortunately damage was kept to that area and the homeowners were able to return.

At 18:44 yesterday evening, we were dispatched to a multi vehicle crash at the intersection of South Main Street x Button Shop Rd. There were numerous injured motorists and a total of 3 ambulances were requested by Newtown Ambulance . Rt 25 was intermittently shut down while vehicles were removed by Hilarios Towing . Newtown CT Police is investigating the crash.

Tanker 557 is out today running water to help out one of our local farmers and SHVFD member . We are always glad to help our farmers when needed.

Tonight at 20:55, we were dispatched to a reported chimney fire in our first due area. and also responded. Fortunately the fire remained contained in the chimney and did not extend to the house.
