My life has taken me in directions I never dreamed it would, simply because I was willing to be brave, take a chance, and say yes to opportunities even when I wasn’t sure where they would lead.

Usually it’s not being smarter, more talented, or more qualified that sets people apart, it is simply being brave enough to try something that others aren’t willing to do.

Not everything works out the way I want. Sometimes I fail completely, and I’m ok with that. What I’m not ok with is sitting on the sidelines wondering what might have happened if only I would have been brave enough to try.

I was setting up for Summerfest a few weeks ago when I happened to meet a girl named Rosey. She is a 7th grader at Guardian Angels School, and she was stocking the Little Pantry at The United Methodist Church in Newtown.

She and her adult, Julie, explained that Rosey and her friend, Eleanor, are students at Guardian Angels School, and they are working on their Girl Scout Silver Award Project. Their goal is simple and profound—they want to reduce food waste and keep the Little Free Pantries in Newtown and Mt. Washington stocked on a regular basis.

During the school year, students can donate unopened, non-perishable canned goods that might otherwise go to waste. This Summer, St. Timothy’s also helped by donating food to keep the project going.

I was so impressed with Rosey as she was telling me about her project! While we were talking, a family walked up and collected a few items, which emphasized the important need of what these girls are doing.

I have spoken to others who help keep this Little Pantry stocked too, and it is reassuring to know that so many people are willing to step up and make a difference in our community one good deed at a time! 💗🙌💪

Sometime last year, a family friend was visiting my daughter, and through a simple conversation about what we had been up to lately, he has no idea of the ripple effect that he set into motion!

I don’t know the specifics, but Jack Hall got me connected to Sheila who was serving with the Ohio History Corps through AmeriCorps at UC.

Sheila and I met earlier this year, and that meeting started a journey that has become a highlight of my year and my professional career!

Over the past several months, we’ve worked together to tackle a project upstairs at the Municipal Building. Some really amazing people volunteered to help, and we’ve met almost every week to sort, identify, catalog, and organize years of Newtown history! What started as a mess upstairs has turned into an organized historical collection that we showcased at Newtown Summerfest 2026!

I’m really proud of what we have already done, and there’s more to the story…

This October, our work will be recognized at the Ohio History Alliance Annual Meeting!

We still aren’t finished and there’s plenty more that we hope to accomplish. I’m excited about where this project will lead next, but this morning, I am thinking about how it all started.

One person did something kind and made a connection. He had no way of knowing that connection would lead to months of work, bring volunteers together, help preserve Newtown’s history, create a partnership that resulted in many new friendships, lots of hard work and lots of laughs and memories along the way, and eventually lead to statewide recognition for the Village of Newtown!!

I’m pretty sure he has no idea that all of this started because of his one simple act of kindness! THANKYOU, Jack Hall!!

This isn’t in Newtown, but it could affect a lot of people that live in Newtown!

ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE! – Due to weather-related impacts, the planned closure of one lane of Newtown Road, between Clough Pike and Mercer's Pointe Drive, has been postponed until Tuesday, Sept. 8 (after Labor Day weekend).

One-Way Newtown Road Closure Starts Sept. 8

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, southbound Newtown Road will be closed between Mercers Point Drive and the junction with Clough Pike for up to 60 days.

A detour will be provided by way of Clough Pike and Bartels Road. Newtown Road heading northbound, or up the hill turning off Clough Pike, will remain open.

The road work is part of the Clough Pike and Newtown Road intersection improvement project which includes the addition of left turn lanes on Clough and Newtown Road, as well as a sidewalk on the south side of Clough Pike, between Copperleaf Lane and Newtown Road. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers.
