Go Green Newtown To disseminate information relating to cost effective and environmentally conscious renewable energy use, energy efficiency and energy conservation programs.

Town Commission for Sustainable Energy Goals:
-Initiative to support the purchase of green energy
-Reduce dependency on natural resources
-Reduce operating costs
-Reduce our “carbon footprint”
-To get households to switch to a clean energy provider MISSION STATEMENT:

To identify, implement and support renewable energy use, energy efficiency and energy conservation programs in which Newtown’s resi

dents, businesses, organizations and town agencies can participate. Furthermore, the Sustainable Energy Commission will support the efforts of Town elected officials, volunteers and employees to identify and implement renewable energy use, energy efficiency and energy conservation programs. To support, develop, and organize any other such programs or innovations as recommended by the Board of Selectman.

Thanks to The Newtown Bee for highlighting the home energy tax credits that will be expiring this year and the major milestone achieved in town.

After years of dedicated coordination and collaboration with the state and industry, all of Newtown’s public facilities will be powered both directly and indirectly with renewable energy - saving the town and residents hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

Check out what our friends at Sustainable Southbury are organizing on October 25:

“You’ll see and learn first-hand how your neighbors are generating their own electricity, padding their pocketbooks with insulation, creating solutions for smaller footprints, and producing a healthier environment for their families and yours!

The tour will feature four homes. Two were built to be "Net Zero", that is, they produce all the power that they need. Each home shows a different approach to achieve "Net Zero". Both were built to enable the owners to live a greener lifestyle and feature sustainable features beyond energy conservation. One was built to be an age-in-place retirement home.”

We are excited to announce the 19th Annual HRRA Recycling Billboard Contest

The theme this year is: “Don’t Trash Textiles!” Students’ artwork should teach residents that textiles don’t belong in the trash. Textiles can be reused, repurposed, repaired or recycled
separately at a designated collection site.

Regional winners could win $100 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd place, $50 for 3rd place or $25 for Honorable Mention!

FOUR Grand Prize Winners!

One Grand Prize winner in each of the following categories will ALSO receive $250.

• Grades K-2 • Grades 3-5 • Grades 6-8 • Grades 9-12

Students can visit https://hrra.org/annual-billboard-contest/ for a complete list of rules, to print a template, find town drop off information as well as get information on why this theme is so
important!

Original artwork should be submitted by November 14, 2025 to our town’s designated collection site. The contest is open to all public, private and homeschooled students in the HRRA region. We
are excited to see the inspiring messages our students create this year!
