Newtown High School Senior Creates Heartfelt Gift for Local Kids in Need

Maya Chaudhary, a 17-year-old senior and aspiring costume designer, just completed an incredibly meaningful capstone project. Using her impressive self-taught sewing skills (which she’s been honing since age 7), Maya handcrafted and donated 20 beautiful stuffed animals to the Newtown Police Department.

These thoughtful creations will now live in police cruisers so officers can offer them to children experiencing stressful or traumatic situations, providing a little comfort and reassurance during some of their toughest moments.

During the donation, Sgt. James shared that officers had responded to a call earlier that same morning, where comfort items like Maya’s stuffed animals would have been especially helpful. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

This fall, Maya will attend Purchase College to study Technical Design and Costume Design. We’re so proud of this talented young artist who’s using her passion to serve our community!

Thank you, Maya, for showing what it means to combine creativity with compassion.

Pass It Forward

Dear Community,

As we celebrate high school and college graduations across Newtown, I want to share a few thoughts with our graduates and the entire community.

In life, you will all face moments filled with friction and noise, situations or people that challenge your focus and test your character. When that happens, I encourage you to remember who you are and what you stand for. Stay grounded. Stay strong. And never lose sight of the values that define you.

A good friend recently shared a powerful commencement speech by Eric Church with me. I highly recommend taking a few minutes to listen. His message is simple but powerful: When the world throws static your way and tries to shake your resiliency, you get to choose how you respond. You decide who you will be.

Do not let the noise of the world dictate your actions. Rise above it. Be the person you were meant to be.

To our graduates and to everyone in our community, keep moving forward with purpose, integrity, and kindness. Newtown is stronger and better because of you.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026!
