Sunday was Day 2 with Palmer Municipal Fire Department Nancy Run Fire Company and Hecktown Volunteer Fire Co. #1 focusing on some advanced vehicle extrication techniques. This rounded out a solid weekend of training with a group of very motivated and talented firefighters.

Our instructors were out in force this weekend with classes in New York and Pennsylvania. Saturday had owner Jason delivering “Responding to Lithium Ion incidents” at the New York State Technical Rescue Conference.
At the same time we worked with Palmer Municipal Fire Department Nancy Run Fire Company and Hecktown Volunteer Fire Co. #1 conducting engine and truck company operations under live fire conditions.
Thank you to everyone who came out to both classes.

Blowing out the dash (part 2)
Once the dash bar is visible, we can gain additional lift with use of a telescopic ram. Alternatively, we can also reposition the spreaders and spread again or even use the ram from the start (harder to be successful on the initial try due to the small ram head).
Once the ram makes contact with the dash bar, it will break it free from its outboard and center mounts, if not broken already, and send the dash to the moon! The secondary push is not always necessary…evaluate and decide. Also take note to how there is very little space lost when the ram is retracted so it can be removed.

***please take note*** If you are triggered by video of firefighters not being dressed like they’re about to enter a building on fire while cutting a car, please continue to scroll. We’ve definitely seen enough keyboard safety police on our posts lately.

Blowing out the dash (part 1)
Here we see a newer firefighter learning a technique for lifting the dash off a patient called the “no-cut dash lift”, where we attack the transverse dash bar to obtain lift with just spreaders and no relief cuts. This method saves time, manpower and tool swaps, to obtain enough lift to remove most patients. This technique has a high success rate and can be accomplished from either the center of the vehicle or from the outboard sides as seen in the video (necessary with modern EV’s due to high voltage battery location).
No single technique works every time, we must still be versed in secondary methods but this is a good starting point. At TRFT, we teach many techniques to accomplish the same task. You find what works for you and your department. Part 2 will show another method using a ram, when additional height is needed.
