The last day of September - Su***de Prevention Awareness Month - will highlight a first at Fairfield Hills and for the Newtown community. A “Listening Bench,” modeled on the growing trend of conversation benches will be dedicated at 11:30 am on Tuesday, September 30. Anyone is welcome to attend - the dedication is expected to take 20-30 min.

The green bench is located along the Fairfield Hills trail just south of the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance headquarters. It also features an informational sign that reminds passersby about the availability of the 988 Su***de & Crisis Hotline, that life matters, and that there is hope during crisis and during moments when individuals may be considering su***de or self-harm.

There will also be a literature dispenser which will carry information and resources for individuals who may be grappling with depression, mental health concerns, addiction, and related situations.

Newtown’s Listening Bench is modeled upon an installation concept to help encourage mental health conversations in the hope of preventing su***de.

As with similar installations, which are very common in Europe and a growing trend in the U.S., it is hoped the bench will be a welcoming place for people who are experiencing mental health concerns, while also prompting others to learn what the bench is for, to stop to ask people if they are OK, and to listen.
