The 12th Annual Soil Health Workshop took place February 11th at the Greencreek Community Hall in Greencreek, ID. The event was well attended by growers and ag professionals across the region. Speakers included Aaron Esser, Regional Dryland Cropping Specialist from the WSU Extension; Mike Kennedy, owner of Infinity Ag; Devon Zenner, Lewis County producer; and Kent Rad, Idaho County Producer. The Greencreek Altar Society prepared a delicious meal and dessert. The Lewis Soil Conservation District (LSCD) and the Lewis County W**d Department organized a poster contest called "Noxious W**ds in Lewis County" for 3rd grade students from Highland, Nezperce, and Kamiah Elementary Schools. Each student was tasked with researching a specific w**d and creating a poster of it. The posters were then evaluated by the LSCD and Lewis County W**d Department staff. Audrey Heartburg was the winner from Nezperce with her poster of Leafy Spurge. The winners from Kamiah were Callie Elliot with her poster of Plumeless Thistle, and Faye Boyle with Leafy Spurge. Harpster Roeller’s poster of Japanese Knotw**d was the winning poster for Highland. These talented students were awarded t-shirts, while all participants received frisbees as a token of appreciation. The LSCD and Lewis County W**d Department extend their gratitude to the teachers - Ms. Jordan and Ms. Winterringer from Kamiah, Ms. Meacham from Nezperce, and Ms. Anderson from Highland Elementary School, for their involvement in the contest. The winning posters will be showcased at the Eller Building during the upcoming Lewis County Fair.

The Lewis Soil Conservation District hosted their 52nd Annual 6th Grade Field Day event at Wi******er Lake State Park on Wednesday, May 7th. The event was attended by 107 students from Kamiah, Highland, St John Bosco, and Prairie school districts. Throughout the day, the students rotated through eight different stations, spending 20 minutes at each. The stations included "Soils and Geology" instructed by Eileen Rowan of the Idaho Soil and Water Conservation Commission and Alyssa Brotnov, the Lewis County 4-H Coordinator; "Take Me Fishing" was hosted by Jennifer Bruns, Cheylee Corle, and Morgan Deards of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and assisted by Matt Becker of the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Shelly Lucier of the Lewis County U of I Extension Office; "Fire Control" was instructed by Owen Case, Ross Rehberg, and Sheldon Schademan of the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL); "Forestry" presented by Chris Gerhart, Dave Luther, and Emily Spets from IDL; "Air Quality" was instructed by Johna Boulafentis of the Nezperce Tribe Air Quality Program, “Fish Science” was instructed by Corie Samson and Laura Sprague of the US Fish and Wildlife Services at the Dworshak Fish Hatchery; a "Nature Trail" hike was led by LSCD board supervisor Tyler Nelson; "Canoeing" was hosted by Alex Arnold, Tia Schumacher, Neosha Hubbs, and Breanna Deards of the NRCS, Mariah Truax of Pheasants Forever, and Klae O’Brien of the U of I Lewis County Extension Office. Jennifer Bernica of the Farm Services Agency assisted with setup, timekeeping, lunch preparation, and takedown. Leann Trautman of the Wi******er Quick Response Unit was there to ensure everyone’s safety. The LSCD would like to thank the students, teachers, volunteers, instructors, and Wi******er Lake State Park personnel for making this another successful year!

Many thanks to our speakers, sponsors, and attendees at the 11th Annual Soil Health Workshop. This event was hosted by Lewis Soil, Idaho Soil and Water, and Clearwater Soil and Water Conservation Districts. LSCD Board Supervisor Tyler Nelson served as the emcee. Keynote Speaker Dr. Curt Livesay, accompanied by Brandon Meiners delivered an energetic presentation on “Soil & Tissue Testing and Interpretation”. Brent Uhlorn provided updates to the Harvest W**d Seed Control System, Reverse Osmosis Water, and the Use of Biostimulants to Enhance Soil Biology. Mike Jackson, Annie Connor, and Eileen Rowan discussed updates on Manure Management Operations, Tom Gehring presented Rodent Control and Pest Management. A delicious meal and cheesecake were provided by the Greencreek Altar Society. We are also very grateful for our sponsors for their support: St John Hardware & Implement, Cottonwood Credit Union, Hillco Technologies, AgWest Farm Credit Services, CHS Primeland, Clearwater Seed, LLC, Branson Farms, Columbia Grain, and Camas Gravel.
