This was posted by a female friends female friend which a agree with. Food for thought.
On this topic I'd like to add that the reversal of Roe V Wade didn't make abortion illegal it just put the issue to the states where it belongs & a President can't make abortions illegal without a Constitutional change which would be almost impossible so it doesn't matter what thier stance is on the subject.
Lengthy but worth the read.
This is a copy of what I wrote. It's an article, short essay, about women's rights. Only read this if you'd like; it's a little long. I sincerely would like to hear others opinions on this.
I’m writing this little article because I find that in order to put some of my thoughts away at night, instead of allowing them to fill my mind and compromise my sleep, to let them filter from my brain through my fingertips to paper (in this case to the keyboard). This works for me so I can focus on other problems at night which keep me awake and thinking. Then I suppose I’ll have to write those down also.
First, I’d like to discuss women’s rights with my readers. With all the negative television and social media discussions on our rights as women are compromised and taken from us, I’d like to point out some rights which we do have. We absolutely have the right and the knowledge to avoid conceiving a child. A woman has about five days a month to get pregnant. During that time most of us know and understand the possibilities of conception. I take a personal affront to those who deem me not intelligent or knowledgeable enough to know how and when I can conceive a baby. The controversy is redundant that we, as intelligent women, don’t know how to avoid conception, or we cannot say no to s*x when we know full well it may result in pregnancy which we might not want. I was 13 years old when I was taught where babies come from. Then I was 16 when I learned the ways to avoid pregnancy. Also, women also have the right to obtain birth control methods, the pill, condoms, etc. There are in every part of America, in the most urban and poverty stricken areas to the rural parts of our country, planned parenthood clinics, health departments which are very willing to hand out birth control pills, condoms at every turn. We have been given the right to seek many different ways to avoid pregnancy. We also have the fundamental right to say no if the partner is not protected. It insults me that people don’t give me the respect I deserve in knowing how and when I can conceive. If you make the decision to have unprotected s*x, knowing it may result in pregnancy or other unwanted events, such as stds, it is the decision, right or wrong, that you had the right to make. If a man has syphilis, for example, my decision would probably be to say, “sorry mister, back up, I don’t want your disease.” The same would apply to the probability of making a baby. “Sorry Mister, back up, I dont want a baby.”
I know for certain there are many women who don’t have accessibility or the education to seek contraception. Then maybe our communities should focus on providing that; before the “oops”. There are also many, in cases of r**e for example where their decisions are made for them, or when the woman’s health is in jeopardy when pregnancy occurs. In those cases exceptions should be made; afterall, it wasn’t a choice.
Women have the rights to make decisions regarding their bodies, yes indeed. The decision to say no, or the decision to take a chance on not becoming pregnant. Once that decision is made, and the “oops” does occur, that decision changes. The woman’s body is no longer only hers; it is now the shell for another body, another life. So I suppose the bottom line is our opinion of when life begins and when life ends. Is life begun at the first heartbeat and ends at the last heartbeat? Or does life begin when baby takes his first breath outside the womb?
Second: Concerning the law. I’d like to compare abortion to euthanasia. It is illegal in most states to mercy kill a cancer patient lying in bed and in pain for months on end. It is against the law to take a life of anyone even under those awful circumstances. It is considered murder in most cases of euthanasia (mercy killing) or assisted su***de. In some states laws vary and have variables, but for the most part, mercy killing or euthanasia and assisted su***de are illegal.
Laws are written for protection purposes. It is against the law to carry unlicensed guns, to smoke or possess pot in some states, to wear a seatbelt when that only protects you, not the general public. I don’t like some laws. Some seem unfair and unnecessary. Laws are made to protect, so I guess I will just abide the best I can like it or not. Abortion is legal in some places, illegal in others. Assisted su***de is legal in some states, not most.
Now, I know this is a very controversial subject. About 77 percent of abortions are performed for economic reasons. Others are other various reasons. I’d just like you to ponder the difference between euthanasia and abortion. I suppose it comes down to when we believe life begins. Does life begin with the first heartbeat of a fetus? This happens before five weeks of pregnancy. Or does life begin with the first breath taken at birth. So, the question is, is taking the life of that fetus the same as taking the life of someone with no quality of life left.
Women do have rights. We have the right to make decisions about our health and welfare. We can make those decisions out of moral conscious, personal ethics, and health. We also have the right to make decisions, but most of us do understand the consequences of those decisions. We know that a bad decision can get us a speeding ticket, jail time for possession of illegal substances, about committing murder, etcetera. But, also we can make a decision about having unprotected s*x, and we know the consequences, but still take our chances. Once our bodies are shared with another life, a life which cannot make a decision yet, that decision is suddenly taken from us. That body is no longer just hers; she now shares it because of a bad decision.
I have no moral, religious, or reasons for opposing abortion. I’m too old to have to even worry about such things. I do oppose taking lives that are not mine. So, I welcome your thoughts and opinions. I am very interested to know how other’s opinions are made on this subject and what can be refuted with my opinions. So, please comment and share your thoughts..
Ok, now I can dwell on other subjects, hopefully ones that don’t interrupt my sleep! Like maybe I’ll ponder why it’s taking so long to figure out how to de salt ocean water so we can use that vast resource for drinking.
