Last night, Officer Ryan VanOverloop was presented with an award for his dedication to the East Lyme Community. The New London Elks Law Enforcement Night honored officers from the New London area for their exceptional efforts.
Officer Ryan VanOverloop is a dedicated law enforcement professional and community leader whose commitment to service extends far beyond the badge. A lifelong Connecticut resident, Officer VanOverloop grew up in Waterford and graduated from Waterford High School in 2006. He went on to attend Worcester State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business while also playing collegiate football. Following graduation, he remained involved in athletics as an assistant football coach for three years, continuing his passion for mentorship and teamwork.
Officer VanOverloop began his law enforcement career with the Ledyard Police Department in 2018 before joining the East Lyme Police Department in 2020. Since that time, he has become a driving force in strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the community. He has taken a leading role in organizing impactful events such as National Night Out, Tip-A-Cop fundraisers, and the Special Olympics Torch Run—initiatives that bring residents and officers together while supporting meaningful causes.
Within the department, Officer VanOverloop serves as a member of the Honor Guard, Special Response Team, and as a Field Training Officer, helping to guide and develop the next generation of officers. His leadership, professionalism, and genuine care for the community have made a lasting impact on both his colleagues and the residents he serves.
Above all, Officer VanOverloop is a devoted husband to his wife, Melissa, and a proud father to their two children, Amelia and Mason. His dedication to family mirrors his commitment to community, embodying the values of service, integrity, and compassion.
Last night's award recognizes Officer VanOverloop’s outstanding contributions and his unwavering dedication to making a difference both in and out of uniform.
