What a wonderful day to kick off summer at Fort Trumbull State Park! I was honored to join Governor Lamont, Commissioner D***s, Commissioner Hurlburt, and Mayor Passero for the official start of Connecticut’s state park season, right here in my backyard in New London.

Fort Trumbull holds a special place in my heart. My kids played here growing up, and now, thanks to our Passport to the Parks program, every Connecticut resident can enjoy our beautiful state parks for free. Across the 20th District alone, we have so many incredible parks to explore! 🌳

Heads up to anyone driving I-95 through New London and Groton: major rehabilitation work begins on the northbound span of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge on May 30. Northbound traffic will shift onto the southbound bridge, lanes will be reduced in both directions, and the speed limit drops to 45 mph. Build extra time into your commute and drive carefully through the work zone.

Yesterday, I joined Congressman Joe Courtney and nursing leaders at CT State Three Rivers to push back on the Trump administration’s decision to gut federal student loans for graduate nursing students. Connecticut isn’t waiting around — we committed $10 million in state loans so these students can finish what they started.

Following the event, I had the chance to meet with a group of nurses who were instrumental in mentoring me early in my career: Betsy Keeny, Susan Borden, Debbie MacDonald, Greta Francios, Jean Swanfeldt, Alma Daugherty, and Marcia Graham.

Connecticut saw this coming and got ahead of it.

When the federal government moved to reclassify nursing, education, and social work graduate programs as non-professional degrees, it threatened to cap student loans and gut the very workforce pipelines we're already struggling to fill. This morning, I joined Congressman Joe Courtney and leaders from AFT-CT, nursing organizations, and Connecticut nursing schools to make clear: we're not letting Washington's recklessness become Connecticut's crisis.

We passed legislation giving these students access to state-level loans. That's what it looks like when a state actually shows up for its students and its workforce.

Connecticut voters were clear in November 2024: they want broader access to the ballot. Today we delivered. The Senate passed HB 5001 to make absentee voting more accessible, bringing Connecticut in line with 28 other states. Now it heads to the governor's desk.
