🚨 AMBULANCE ETIQUETTE: When We're at Your Neighbor's

Seeing an ambulance on your street can be alarming — here's how to be a good neighbor when we're there for someone else:

DO:
✅ Give us space — stay back and let us work
✅ Keep kids and pets inside or at a safe distance
✅ Move your vehicle if it's blocking our path
✅ Respect their privacy — it's not the moment for pictures or video

DON'T:
❌ Crowd the scene to see what's happening
❌ Block the street or driveway with your car
❌ Assume the worst and spread rumors before you know the facts
❌ Approach the crew with questions while they're working

A little space and privacy goes a long way for a neighbor having a hard day. 💙

With kids back on the roads, mornings and afternoons look a little different. A few reminders to keep everyone safe:

✅ Stop for flashing lights — school buses mean business
✅ Watch for kids darting out between parked cars
✅ Slow down in school zones, even if you're running late
✅ Give crossing guards and buses extra space and patience

🚨 AMBULANCE ETIQUETTE: When EMS Comes to Your Workplace

Every second counts when paramedics walk through your doors. Here's how to help them help your coworker:

DO:
✅ Post a greeter at the entrance — One designated person meets the crew and leads the way
✅ Clear the path before we arrive — Prop doors, hold elevators, move obstacles
✅ Give us space to work — Onlookers slow us down and take away the patient's privacy
✅ Have information ready — Medications, allergies, emergency contacts, and what happened
✅ Be specific — Floor, room number, and the fastest route to get there

DON'T:
❌ Make us hunt — "Somewhere on the second floor" costs time we don't have
❌ Leave us locked out — Waiting on security or keys isn't a small delay
❌ Let a crowd form — One person nearby is helpful. Ten people watching is not
❌ Assume we know the layout — Familiar buildings still need a guide

Pro tip: Build EMS access into your emergency drills. Assign greeters, map your fastest routes, and practice it before you need it. 💙

Know the rules when we’re on the move:

🚑 Lights & siren, approaching you? Pull to the right edge of the road and STOP until we pass

🚗 We’re stopped on the roadside with lights on? Move over a full lane if you can

📏 Can’t move over? Slow down 10 mph below the speed limit and give us as much room as possible

👀 Stay alert — a few seconds could save a life

It’s Michigan law (MCL 257.653 & 653a) — and it’s just the right thing to do. 💙

If our ambulance is parked with lights flashing at a scene, here's how to keep everyone safe:

🚑 Move over a full lane if you can do it safely
🚑 If you can't change lanes, slow down significantly
🚑 Keep your eyes on the road, not the scene — rubbernecking causes more accidents
🚑 Give our crew room to move around the vehicle and load patients
🚑 Never stop to ask questions or take photos — it puts everyone at risk

Martha is a retired EMT who now manages our supplies at every station. Every shelf labeled, every bin sorted, every cabinet stocked — because she knows firsthand what it’s like to need the right gear in the right place, fast.
