Storm damage alert. M-51 and Peavine. There was a large tree down across M-51 that brought down Communication lines and a Pole. These were verified to be Communication lines and we have cleared the tree from the road as much as possible. The remaining area was marked off with traffic cones and caution tape. It could be some time before MDOT and utilities can finish the cleanup. Please use caution in that area.

This evening, the Pokagon Fire Department was dispatched to a group of tubers in distress on the Dowagiac River.

Crews quickly responded and began searching for the individuals. One of our firefighters, who is also a rescue diver, entered the river near Arthur Dodd Park and swam downstream to reach the group. After locating them, a rapid medical assessment was completed, and the individuals were safely freed from fallen trees and other debris that had trapped them.

The firefighter then escorted the group approximately a half mile downstream through the swift current to a location where additional firefighters were staged to assist everyone safely out of the water.

This incident serves as an important reminder that the Dowagiac River is currently flowing very fast and contains numerous hazards, including large amounts of debris, fallen trees, and complete blockages. Even with specialized training and protective equipment, navigating these conditions was dangerous.

If you plan to enjoy the river, please use extreme caution, wear a properly fitted life jacket, never float alone, and always be aware that conditions can change quickly. Your safety is our priority.

Great work by everyone involved for a successful outcome and a safe rescue.

We would also like to thank Cass County Dispatch 911, the Niles Township Fire and Niles City Fire who were requested to assist and SMCAS for evaluating everyone involved.

Congratulations on your retirement Kelly. Thank you for the years of service.
