Yesterday two members of the Armin Homann Foundation were honored to receive Verdienst Orden from the German Day Society. These medals were given based off of our years of service to the German community. Thank you for such a special honor. We know this brings a big smile to Armin ❤️🇩🇪⚽️

Last week, we lost one of the pillars of our German community, Erich Himmel. Erich was the long time president of the German Day association and the annual Oktoberfest in Lincoln square was his pride and joy. The Himmel Family asked for donations to the Armin Homann Foundation in lieu of flowers and we’ve raised almost $5,000 in honor of Erich. We look forward to honoring his legacy through scholarships and we hope you all join us in honoring his legacy by stopping by this wonderful fest this weekend.

Rest In Peace, Erich. We know you and Armin are having your own special Oktoberfest 💙

Please help us celebrate our 5 year anniversary by making a donation today. All donations will be used for scholarships this fall ❤️🇩🇪

It's our 5th anniversary and we hope you will help by celebrating with us!

We are so proud of keeping Armin's memory and legacy alive for the past five years by providing scholarships for college education, living expenses for those studying abroad, and field trips. We also have fond memories of our soccer camp for recently resettled youth and have partnered with other soccer organizations to provide financial assistance for low-income youth. We hope you can continue to support our efforts by making a donation in honor of Armin. We hope to celebrate this summer (in person) too!

5 years ago today we lost our beloved Armin. He was a father, Opa, German radio host, soccer play, and meant a lot to so many people. He enjoyed traveling, connecting with people, and his social calendar was busier than anyone else we know. He was so funny, lighthearted, and enjoyed his German beer. We miss him everyday, but it warms our hearts that we can continue his memory with this wonderful foundation. Please consider a donation today in honor of him. 🍺❤️🇩🇪❤

Congratulations to our third scholarship recipient, Matthew Slabinger!

When asked about our scholarship, Matthew said: “This scholarship means the hard work has really paid off, especially from my family who have supported me from the beginning. The scholarship, for me, is not the end but just the beginning.”

Meet Stephanie Mayer! She’s a first time recipient of the Armin Homann Foundation scholarship and has recently started her first semester at Drake University.

“German culture has been a great influence in my life, and this scholarship is a reflection of that. Writing the essay for this scholarship provided me the opportunity to realize how involved I am in many German organizations. I am honored to be this year’s scholarship recipient and look forward to continuing to uphold the values of the Armin Homann Foundation through participating in my German youth group, speaking the language, and volunteering at numerous cultural festivities throughout the year.”

Congratulations, Stephanie!

Meet our scholarship recipients!

First, Katrina Giannoni. When asked what this scholarship means to here, she says:

“ Thank you so much for the honor of allowing me to be a recipient of the Armin Homann Scholarship yet again. This scholarship and the meaning behind the Armin Homann Foundation has always meant a lot to me. As many of you know back in January of this year my Opa, Béla Mohapp passed away. During the last few months of my Opa’s life the time I spent with him will always have a special place in my heart. Armin & Opa were cut from the same cloth and now knowing that they’re probably both enjoying a bier in heaven together makes me smile. Cheers to them and the legacies they left behind. I look forward to continuing to make my Opa proud as I near the end of my academic journey and follow my dream of becoming a nurse. I look forward to giving back to my community and helping better the lives of others. I would like to give a huge shoutout to my parents for always providing me with the love and support to go on even in tough times. I would also like to thank my brothers, Giovanni, Kristoff, and Lucca for being my cheerleaders every step of the way; success doesn’t come without trials and tears. I would also like to thank the Armin Homann Foundation and the Homann family for helping to keep our German heritage alive.”

Thank you,
Katrina Annemarie Giannoni, CPhT, MA

Sometimes the internet brings you some nice surprises.

We found a radio interview that was done in Bielefeld in 2013. The guest featured was our very own Armin. It’s nice to hear his voice again and his story of how he became the Midwest’s largest German radio show.

Hope you enjoy this as much as we did ❤️

Today we remember Armin as a phenomenal radio host, great soccer player, loyal friend, and loving Father, Opa, Brother, and Uncle.

We miss seeing this bright light in our lives as well as the German community. So many things have changed in the last four years without him, but we’re committed to keeping his memory and legacy alive through the Foundation.

Please consider supporting the Armin Homann Foundation today in honor of him. ♥️🍺⚽️🇩🇪

Have you ever heard of a pickle on your Christmas tree being a German tradition? Check put this video

🥒🤔🎄The first person to find the Christmas pickle on the Christmas tree gets an extra present: In the US, this tradition is seen to have originated from a German custom. In Germany, however, it’s completely unheard of. We set out to solve the mystery of the Christmas pickle!

We are so incredibly sad to learn about the passing of Rüdiger “Enzi” Enzmann. He was a dear friend of Armin, our family, and entertained the German community here in chicago for many years.

Thoughts and prayers to his wonderful family. We know that Enzi and Armin are having a nice beer together 🍻

Er hatte sich zwei Jahre gegen den Krebs gestemmt, doch die Krankheit war stärker: Heimatsänger Rüdiger „Enzi“ Enzmann ist gestorben.

We love this tradition. How are you and your family celebrating Advent?

Today in German-speaking Europe many families will be setting up an Advent wreath (Adventskranz) for the first Advent Sunday (the fourth before Christmas) to start off the Advent season. An Advent wreath has four candles, one for each week of Advent.

Traditionally families would gather around the wreath on each Advent Sunday to light the next candle and sing Christmas carols. This practice was more common in the past when the Christmas tree was not unveiled until Christmas Eve. Until then, the Advent wreath provided the evergreen look and aroma in the house. Does your family have an Advent wreath?

Back on July 18th, we posted that it was my son’s birthday and the request for his friends to donate new or used soccer items to ESCO-Elite Soccer Community Organization. In addition to the birthday donations, a handful of families reached out and dropped off their used items and we were also able to coordinate this VERY generous donation from The Armin Homann Foundation.

Who says social media doesn’t do any good?! We are so thankful for this community support. Kindness counts!
